About the Location

A Piece of Springfield History

Tucked at the intersection of Mason Street and MacArthur Boulevard, Duncan Park spreads across 26 acres of Springfield greenery. In 2020, the park got a meaningful new name to honor Otis B. Duncan, a hometown hero and the highest-ranking Black officer in the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I.

The 2020 renaming wasn't just a simple change - it came exactly a century after the park's 1920 establishment and represented Springfield's broader effort to recognize historically underrepresented figures. Colonel Duncan (1873-1937) finally got his due, adding a layer of significance to this community space.

Play & Recreation Spots

If you're looking for a place where kids can burn off energy, Duncan Park has a modern playground system. Little ones seem to enjoy the zip line, while the teeter-totter and musical instruments add variety to playtime options.

Parents can breathe easy knowing the playground is fenced in, creating a secure environment where kids can roam freely while adults relax on nearby benches. The percussion instruments appeal to both kids and grown-ups - something a bit different from your typical playground fare.

For those focused on fitness, the park includes a public fitness court and well-kept walking trails that wind through the grounds. When winter blankets Springfield in snow, head to the sledding hill in the northern section for some seasonal fun.

For Sports Enthusiasts

Disc golf fans, take note: Duncan Park houses Springfield's first disc golf course, established back in 2000. The 18-hole course offers beautiful views and enough challenges to keep things interesting. While newcomers might find the signage a bit confusing at first, the course's uphill shots and varied terrain make for an engaging round whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro.

Pickleball, anyone? The park boasts eight outdoor pickleball courts available from dawn until dusk. Between the disc golf, pickleball, and open fields, there's no shortage of ways to get moving here.

Handy Amenities

Planning a gathering? Duncan Park offers three distinct picnic shelters for your next family reunion or birthday celebration. These range from basic covers to more equipped options with electricity and restrooms. Several shelters are handicap accessible and conveniently close to parking - always a plus when you're hauling coolers and supplies.

The park's bandshell sits at its center, creating a picturesque spot for community events and the occasional music festival. As for parking, you've got options with three lots strategically placed around the park: one along MacArthur Boulevard (55 spaces), another along Mason Street (90 spaces), and a third along Salome (over 50 spaces).

A pedestrian walkway connects the Mason Street and MacArthur parking lots, passing the bandshell along the way. You won't have to worry about dodging cars while enjoying the grounds - the park is free of vehicular traffic. And those restrooms? They got a nice refresh in 2019, so they're clean and up-to-date.

Natural Surroundings

Duncan Park provides a nice green space within Springfield's urban landscape. The grounds are well-maintained with regular mowing, creating a clean, inviting atmosphere for all visitors. Mature trees dot the landscape, providing welcome shade on hot days and homes for local wildlife - including the squirrels that delight many dog walkers.

The open grassy spaces are fantastic for spreading out a blanket, enjoying a packed lunch, or simply taking a moment to yourself. Whether you need a quick escape during your lunch break or a weekend destination for the whole family, this green space offers some tranquility in the heart of the city.
