About the Location

Park History

Gietl Park is a beloved 11.7-acre public park located in Springfield, Illinois, at the intersection of Bly and Stanhope Roads. Established in 1968, the park was formally known as Northeast Park before it was renamed in 1982 to honor Louis Gietl Sr., a long-serving park trustee and board president.

The park is bordered by Wilcox School to the north and is managed by the Springfield Park District.

Amenities and Features

Historically, Gietl Park featured the Veterans Memorial Pool, a swimming facility that was once the private Suburban Aquatic Club. However, recent redevelopment efforts have seen the replacement of the aging pool with a modern splash pad.

This new splash pad is designed to cater to multiple age groups and is fully ADA accessible, offering an inclusive recreational experience for visitors of all mobility levels.

Recent Improvements

Redevelopment plans also include the addition of concrete walkways and plazas, updated park shelters, lighting, site furnishings, and enhanced landscaping.

Gietl Park provides an inviting space for families, walkers, and community members to enjoy outdoor activities. Although it is a smaller neighborhood park, its recent renovations aim to make it a vibrant and accessible gathering spot for the Springfield community.
