About the Location
A Glimpse Into History
Tucked away at the corner of Bly and Stanhope Roads in Springfield, Illinois, you'll find Gietl Park - a cozy 11.7-acre green space that's been a part of the community since 1968. Originally known as Northeast Park, it was renamed in 1982 to honor Louis Gietl Sr., who dedicated years of service as both a park trustee and board president.
The park sits right next to Wilcox School on its northern edge and falls under the care of the Springfield Park District.
What You'll Find There
Gietl Park has seen some changes over the years. The Veterans Memorial Pool - once the private Suburban Aquatic Club - was a longtime fixture, but recent updates have replaced the aging pool with a modern splash pad.
This new water feature is designed for kids of different ages, and it's fully ADA accessible - meaning everyone can use it, regardless of mobility challenges.
Places to Play
Kids will love the playground that is a natural gathering spot for neighborhood families. It's nothing fancy, but it offers that classic park experience that never goes out of style.
Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the ball fields for casual games or organized activities. There's also plenty of open grassy space good for throwing a frisbee, having a picnic, or just sprawling out with a good book on a sunny afternoon.
Taking a Stroll
One of the nicest features of the park is its paved walkways that loop around the grounds. No matter if you're getting your morning steps in, jogging after work, or taking your four-legged friend for a walk (on leash, please!), the clean, well-maintained paths make it easy to enjoy the outdoors.
You'll also find clean restrooms and drinking water available - those practical necessities that make a longer visit much more comfortable. Several shelters dot the grounds, offering shade on hot days or cover if you get caught in a surprise shower.
Looking Forward
The park is getting even better with planned improvements including new concrete walkways and plazas, updated shelters, improved lighting, fresh site furnishings, and enhanced landscaping.
While Gietl Park isn't massive, it's a well-kept neighborhood space that serves its purpose beautifully. It's the kind of place where you might not spend your entire day, but it offers that perfect little slice of outdoor enjoyment when you need a break from the daily grind.
