Sprawling across 120 acres of diverse landscapes, West Park spans 120 acres of diverse landscapes in Carmel. You can wander through restored prairie areas and explore the wetland pond via accessible boardwalks and paved trails that make nature available to everyone.

If you're into wildlife watching, keep your eyes peeled for blue herons gracefully stalking the shallows, ducks paddling across the water, and frogs croaking from the reeds. Rabbits frequently hop along the edges of the paths, and if you're patient (and lucky), you might even spot beavers going about their busy work. The park's prairie maze combines nature with recreation, while the boardwalk crossing over the lake provides good spots to observe the ecosystem.

Come winter, locals flock to the park's two-story sledding hill, affectionately nicknamed Jill's Hill. The hill has a gradual walkway that makes the climb back up with your sled easier. On clear nights, the hill transforms into a natural observatory - great for laying back and taking in the stars.

Community Facilities

At the heart of West Park stands the Jill Perelman Pavilion, functioning as a community gathering space for Carmel Clay Parks' events, summer camps, and recreational programs. It provides indoor space for educational activities throughout the year.

Scattered around the grounds are several covered picnic shelters equipped with tables, seating, and grills - ideal spots for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or simply enjoying lunch in the shade. You'll appreciate the temperature-controlled restrooms that remain open year-round (a detail that shouldn't be underestimated on a long day outdoors).

Park History and Amenities

Since its establishment in 2002, West Park has evolved considerably. A significant renovation in 2022, funded by the Clay Township Impact Program, has transformed it into one of the area's most engaging outdoor spaces.

The park's design prioritizes accessibility with extensive paved trails well-suited for walking and biking, some of which loop through serene wooded areas that feel miles away from city life. Seasonal drinking fountains keep everyone hydrated during warmer months.

Anglers will appreciate the fishing pier that extends into the pond, where the water remains clean and clear, dotted with lily pads and frequented by ducks. And four-legged family members aren't forgotten - the park is notably dog-friendly with free bag dispensers thoughtfully placed along the walking paths.
