About the Location

Recreational Facilities

Howell Park offers a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. The 9-hole par 3 golf course is meant for both beginners and those looking to refine their short game. Right next to it, there's also a miniature golf course with colorful flowers framing each hole. It's super affordable for families, but you might notice some spots that could use a little TLC.

On hot summer days, the swimming pool is popular, featuring a large water slide that both kids and adults tend to enjoy repeatedly. There's also a separate play area for younger children where the little ones can splash safely. The pool is kept impressively clean, won't break the bank, and the lifeguards are attentive and professional. If basketball is more your thing, head over to the basketball courts for a casual game or to shoot some hoops solo.

Playground and Family Areas

The park has several playground areas scattered throughout, with equipment suited for various ages. Notable is the climbing rock in the children's area - offering a different kind of challenge from the traditional playground equipment.

You can bring your four-legged friends along too, as the park is dog-friendly. Just remember to pack water for your pup since pet fountains aren't currently available.

Relaxation Areas

Need a breather? The park offers peaceful picnic areas and green spaces where you can spread out a blanket, enjoy a meal, or simply watch the clouds roll by. Conveniently, these spots aren't far from the parking lots, so you won't have to haul your cooler across the entire park.

Howell Park features two shelter houses, including the notable Howell Shelter House that can host up to 125 people. It's not your average park shelter - this one comes equipped with air conditioning, a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and tables and chairs. It's no wonder these shelters are constantly booked for family reunions and gatherings.

Nearby Natural Attractions

One of the park's greatest assets is its location right next to Howell Wetlands, which happens to be among Indiana's largest urban wetlands. After you've enjoyed the park amenities, take a stroll on the wooden walking trails and boardwalks that wind through this natural habitat.

The combination of recreation facilities and natural areas allows for both playground activities and nature walks in the same visit.

Community Events

Keep an eye out for community gatherings like Music in the Park that happen occasionally year-round. These events provide opportunities for community gatherings in the park.

Additional Information

It's worth noting that maintenance can vary across different areas of the park. Some facilities shine while others might show their age a bit. That said, Howell Park tends to be quieter than many other city parks, making it an ideal choice if you're looking for a more peaceful outdoor experience.

Restrooms are available, but you should know that during certain times of the year, some permanent facilities may be replaced with portable options.
