About the Location
From Lake to Beloved Green Space: A History
There's something special about Lorraine Park's backstory. Back in the 1920s, this spot wasn't a park at all, but actually a lake! Eventually drained and reimagined, it evolved into the community space we enjoy today.
We find it interesting that the early transformation wasn't exactly glamorous - the land was initially filled with debris and repurposed materials. But over time, the area was transformed into the neighborhood green space you see today.
What You'll Find Here
Wandering through Lorraine Park, you'll discover generous open spaces ideal for whatever activity strikes your fancy. Regardless of whether you're organizing an impromptu soccer game, tossing a frisbee, or just teaching your little one to catch their first ball, there's plenty of room to spread out.
The Lorraine Pool is particularly popular during those sweltering Indiana summers. It is home base for the Lorraine Dolphins swim team and hosts swimming lessons for neighborhood kids looking to improve their strokes. Just keep in mind that public swimming hours can vary, so it's worth checking ahead of time.
If you've got energetic children in tow, head toward the pool area where you'll discover most of the playground equipment. Need to refuel? Several picnic spots scattered throughout make for perfect lunch breaks between activities.
When the summer sun gets a bit too intense, the shelter house offers a welcome retreat. It's a favorite spot for family gatherings, birthday celebrations, or simply enjoying a packed lunch in the shade.
A Hub for Community Connection
More than just a place to play, Lorraine Park represents a gathering point for community events. The East Sector's National Night Out regularly brings neighbors together here, strengthening community bonds and promoting neighborhood safety.
From its humble beginnings to what it is today, Lorraine Park has become a meaningful local space. It's where many residents have learned to swim, celebrated milestones, or simply enjoyed quiet afternoons outdoors.
