About the Location
From State School to Community Hub
Tucked between E. State Boulevard and Parnell Avenue in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Bob Arnold Northside Park offers 37.47 acres of green escape. This community park has an interesting backstory - it once served as the State School and Training Center before the city acquired the land in 1979 for public recreation. After securing funds through a bond package, the gates officially opened on June 4, 1983.
In 1999, the park was renamed to honor Bob Arnold, who dedicated an impressive 45 years of his life as director of the Fort Wayne Park & Recreation Department - talk about commitment to community service!
Get Your Recreation On
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just enjoy the outdoors, this park offers a variety of options. Disc golf enthusiasts will appreciate the nine-hole course that accommodates both newbies and more experienced players.
Sports options abound with basketball courts, tennis courts, ball fields, and an open space that serves as an informal soccer field - great for those impromptu weekend games with friends.
Cool Off at Northside Pool
When summer temperatures climb, the Northside Pool becomes the neighborhood's favorite retreat. It's not just a basic swimming spot - you'll come across water slides, a splash pad, and shade umbrellas when you need a break from the sun. They also offer swimming lessons if you're looking to improve your backstroke, plus concessions when hunger strikes after all that splashing around.
Kid-Friendly Fun
The thoughtfully designed playground is a highlight for families with little ones. Crafted to support physical, social, and emotional development for children aged 2-12, the equipment invites kids to slide, climb, and explore. What's particularly noteworthy is that this playground welcomes children of all abilities - everyone gets to join in the fun.
Parents and caregivers haven't been forgotten either - you can keep an eye on the kids while relaxing on the shaded benches with back support.
More Than Play
Interestingly, the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department's main office calls this park home. Beyond organized activities, the park provides quiet spaces well-suited for a peaceful walk, a family picnic, or simply sitting with a good book under the shade of a tree. The park offers both active recreation areas and quiet spaces for relaxation.
