About Hanna Homestead Park
A Glimpse of Fort Wayne History
The Hanna family donated this meaningful piece of land to what would eventually become one of Fort Wayne's more historically layered small parks. Back in 1839, a homestead was built here that wore many hats over the years, including serving as a home for children with disabilities, before being torn down in 1962. The property made its way to the Parks Department in 1966, transforming into the community park we enjoy today.
Maintained by Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation, Hanna Homestead Park sits at the corner of Gay Street and Lewis Street and carries the legacy of Samuel Hanna - one of the city's founding fathers. At just 2.5 acres it's compact, but it packs quite a historical punch.
What's There to Do?
Despite its modest footprint, the park offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. A smooth paved walking path circles the perimeter - ideal for your morning jog or an evening stroll to clear your head.

Feel like shooting some hoops? The basketball court comes complete with bleachers and benches for spectators or those waiting for their turn on the court. Baseball enthusiasts haven't been forgotten either - a baseball field stands ready for impromptu games or organized community matchups.
Got kids in tow? They'll make a beeline for the two playground sets and swing set, where they can burn off energy while you catch a moment's peace on a nearby bench.
Good to Know
Note that while the park has bathrooms, they remain locked throughout the day, so you might want to plan accordingly. On the tech-friendly side, there are charging stations available - a thoughtful touch for keeping your devices powered while you enjoy some outdoor time.
Neighborhood Treasure
Hanna Homestead functions as a neighborhood gathering spot where you'll often find families picnicking, teenagers playing basketball, and neighbors catching up on local news - all against the backdrop of Fort Wayne history.
