About the Location
A Bit of History
Set in Fort Wayne, Kreager Park sprawls across a generous 218.75 acres. Once known simply as the Seyfert Farm property, the land was purchased back in 1967 and has transformed dramatically over the decades. The park got its name after receiving a whopping $5 million donation from Gale Kreager - talk about making an impact!
Taylor's Dream: Where Every Child Plays
If you're visiting with kids, Taylor's Dream: Boundless Playground, which opened in 2011, is definitely worth checking out. This award-winning accessible space includes a splash pad that's excellent for hot summer days. The design is pretty clever, featuring three circular pods with different activity areas at various heights, all connected by accessible ramps.
Taylor's Dream stands out for its inclusivity, offering therapeutic and fun learning spaces for children of all abilities. Instead of typical mulch, you'll come across soft, artificial turf that's safer and more accessible, especially for kids zooming between the playground and splash pad.
Thoughtfully designed, the playground separates areas for the little ones (under 5) from spaces for older children, with the splash pad sitting conveniently between them. This smart layout means you can keep an eye on siblings of different ages without running back and forth - a small detail that makes a big difference for parents!
Trails That Tell Stories
The park is embraced by open fields and patches of forest, creating a great backdrop for outdoor adventures. A 0.95-mile section of the Rivergreenway trail loops through the park, connecting to the east end of the greenway along the Maumee River and stretching into New Haven.
Paved walking paths trace almost the entire perimeter, offering peaceful strolls with scenic views. The wooden trails that meander through more natural areas offer a calming escape from the more active parts of the park.
If you're looking to simply enjoy open space, the natural areas are excellent for flying kites when the wind picks up. The beautiful trees and sunset views add to the park's charm.
Get Your Game On
Sports facilities include lighted softball fields, soccer fields, and tennis courts. The soccer fields feature good athletic lighting and are well-maintained.
The park includes 20 different units of outdoor fitness equipment that are free to use. These are thoughtfully placed near the playground, so you can squeeze in a workout while watching your kids play - multitasking at its finest!
Comfort and Accessibility for All
Kreager Park has good accessibility features. You'll discover clean restrooms with family changing areas and handicap-accessible facilities throughout. Multiple covered pavilions with picnic tables provide perfect spots for family gatherings or a shaded lunch break.
The park welcomes dogs and provides water fountains with lower bowls for pets. Waste bins are conveniently placed throughout to keep everything clean and pleasant.
With plenty of parking throughout the property and connections to neighborhood trails, Kreager Park is a popular recreational spot for Fort Wayne residents of all ages and abilities.
