About the Location
A Sporting Park on Indy's East Side
Positioned on the east side of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis World Sports Park spans 46 acres of green space that's been transformed from its humble beginnings as Post Road Community Park. After renovations in 2012, this space bloomed into the multi-sport facility we see today.
The park sits comfortably between East Washington Street and Brookville Road, with mature trees creating a natural border around the grounds. There's a modern parking lot with plenty of spaces, but heads up - during big events, you might find yourself in a bit of a traffic jam since there's only one way in and out.
Fields of Play
What makes this park special is its versatility. The athletic fields here can be configured for an impressive variety of sports: cricket, lacrosse, hurling, rugby, Australian rules football, Gaelic football, and soccer.
Cricket enthusiasts particularly appreciate the main field, which boasts a full sand carpet outfield meeting professional standards. It's worth noting that only one field is built to international standards, while a secondary field uses synthetic turf - not quite the same experience, but still functional.
Beyond Organized Sports
Not in the mood for a formal game? There are other options available too. There's a basketball court where you can shoot some hoops, and a playground for the little ones. While the playground equipment isn't exactly state-of-the-art, it still does the job for kids looking to burn off some energy.
The park also features a walking trail that meanders through the grounds. Local residents often make this well-maintained path part of their daily routine, whether for serious exercise or leisurely afternoon strolls. It's a safe, peaceful route that works perfectly for both solo workouts and family walks.
Comfort and Convenience
You'll discover clean restrooms housed in a modern building on-site - always a plus for any extended visit. There are also several picnic areas if you're in the mood to enjoy a meal outdoors.
Dog lovers, rejoice! The park welcomes four-legged friends, making it a favorite spot for neighborhood pet owners who regularly walk their dogs along the trails.
History and Events
The park as we know it today was completed in 2014 with a $5.1 million price tag. Originally envisioned as a cricket destination, its launch didn't quite go as planned when the inaugural U.S. cricket men's national championship was canceled due to logistical issues.
Since then, though, the facility has found its footing, hosting local Gaelic games and international cricket events, including the 2015 ICC Americas Twenty20 Division One tournament.
Room for Improvement
Despite its quality playing surfaces, the park does have some limitations. You won't find floodlights for evening games, and serious athletes might miss having a proper pavilion, clubhouse, changing rooms, media area, or permanent concession stands.
Its residential location creates an interesting dynamic - neighboring houses sit close enough that an enthusiastic cricket batsman might actually hit a ball into someone's yard!
A Community Asset
The Indianapolis World Sports Park represents an interesting chapter in the city's recreational development. While its creation wasn't without controversy - some local officials questioned using infrastructure funds for the project during tight budget times - it's now used by both sports teams and local residents.
Families and individuals from surrounding neighborhoods use the space for recreation, exercise, and simply enjoying nature. It offers east side residents a place to play, walk, or simply enjoy the outdoors.
