About the Location
Recreational Facilities
Found on the south side of Indianapolis, Perry Park spans a cozy 21 acres. While not the largest green space in the city, this neighborhood park offers activities for everyone from toddlers to teens to adults looking for some outdoor time.
Indoor Ice Rink
What's distinctive about Perry Park is the indoor ice skating rink that operates from September through April. This isn't just any rink - it's NHL-sized, giving you plenty of room to glide whether you're a wobbly beginner or practically a pro.
The ice represents home base for several local organizations, including the South Stars High School Hockey Club, the South Indy Youth Hockey Association, and the Sycamore Ice Skating Club with their Learn to Skate programs.
You can find all the essentials here - a snack bar for when hunger strikes, rental skates if you don't have your own, and skate sharpening services. The lobby offers a place to lace up, and there are spectator bleachers for watching hockey games and performances, but they're admittedly not the most comfortable seats in town.
One of the best parts? Public skating won't break the bank, making this one of the more wallet-friendly skating options around Indianapolis. Just remember to check the official website or call ahead for public skating hours - they can shift around depending on hockey games and other events.
Outdoor Amenities
When the weather's nice, Perry Park offers plenty of reasons to stay outside. Work on your jump shot at the basketball courts or practice your backhand at the tennis courts.
Kids have their own space too, with a playground area that, while not enormous, gives the little ones room to climb and slide. Just keep in mind it's near a busy street, so you'll want to keep a close eye on adventurous youngsters.
Swimming Pool
Come summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), the seasonal outdoor swimming pool becomes the park's main attraction. The pool area features fun sprayers and slides that are sure to keep kids entertained for hours.
What makes this pool particularly great for families is its layout - there's a large shallow section about 1 foot deep, and it only goes down to around 4 feet at its deepest. The lifeguards are attentive and take water safety seriously.
At roughly $5 for adults and $4 for children, a day of swimming won't drain your wallet. There are plenty of chairs for lounging poolside, but you might want to bring a hat or umbrella since shaded spots can be hard to come by.
You'll also find clean restrooms, showers, and small lockers for stashing your stuff while you swim - all the basics covered.
Park Grounds
When you're looking for a more relaxed day, Perry Park offers green spaces meant for spreading out a blanket or enjoying a meal outdoors. The two large shelters come equipped with picnic tables and grills, making them ideal spots for family get-togethers or small celebrations.
The sports field provides open space for impromptu games of frisbee, soccer, or whatever activity strikes your fancy. While Perry Park might be smaller than some of Indy's other outdoor spaces, its diverse offerings provide more activities than you might expect from a 21-acre park.
