About the Location
A Glimpse into History
Located in South Bend, Indiana, Coquillard Park is one of the city's oldest neighborhood green spaces, having been part of the local park system since 1906. Stretching across 8 acres, this peaceful retreat offers an excellent balance of lightly tree-shaded areas and open spaces where you can play, relax, or simply enjoy being outdoors.
The park has roots that run deep in South Bend's history. It was originally part of a larger piece of land envisioned by Alexis Coquillard, one of South Bend's founding figures. While his dreams of an expansive park weren't fully realized, the 10-acre section that became today's park carries on his legacy in a meaningful way.
Places to Play
Need to burn some energy? Coquillard's open fields are well-suited for impromptu games of soccer, while dedicated courts await basketball and volleyball enthusiasts. The well-kept pathways make for pleasant walking routes whether you're out for your morning jog or just taking a leisurely afternoon stroll.
For those visiting with kids, the park has three different playgrounds designed for various age groups. And here's a fun fact: the climbing equipment is sturdy enough that adults can join in too (no judgment here!). When summer temperatures rise, the recently upgraded splash pad near the basketball and tennis courts becomes the neighborhood's favorite cooling-off spot.
Rest and Refresh
Need a break from the sun? The park's pavilion with multiple picnic tables offers a shaded retreat ideal for catching your breath or enjoying a meal outdoors. The space works beautifully for intimate picnics and smaller gatherings - nothing too elaborate, but just right for a family outing or meeting up with friends.
Note that the park offers portable toilets rather than permanent facilities. For those bringing four-legged friends along, you'll appreciate the thoughtful dog-friendly water station complete with waste bags and designated trash bins.
What to Expect
Mornings at Coquillard tend to be especially peaceful and quiet. Parking is street-side only along the narrow adjacent roads, so you might want to arrive early on busy days.
One of the park's natural highlights is its abundance of large trees that create plenty of natural shade around the grounds. The combination of shaded areas and open spaces makes the park suitable for various outdoor activities.
More Than a Park
Coquillard Park combines natural beauty with practical amenities, offering space for both active recreation and quiet relaxation. With its historical significance, it remains an important part of South Bend's neighborhood landscape.
