About the Location

Natural Beauty Awaits

Tucked just west of Cedar Rapids, Morgan Creek County Park spreads across 352 acres of diverse Iowa landscape. This natural landscape combines steep wooded hills, rolling terrain, and the meandering Morgan Creek valley - providing habitat for local plants and animals.

The park transforms with the seasons throughout the year. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, summer shows off prairie wildflowers in full bloom, fall turns the arboretum into a kaleidoscope of colors, and winter invites you to glide through on cross-country skis. Keep your eyes peeled for the local residents - deer casually browsing, rabbits hopping about, hawks soaring overhead, and countless birds flitting between trees.

Fresh New Look

If you haven't visited recently, you're in for a pleasant surprise. The park got a major facelift in 2022, particularly on the south side. The new day-use entrance on E Ave NW makes getting in and exploring easier than ever.

A notable improvement is the expanded trail system that now offers over four miles of paths to explore. Many sections of the paved walking trails are wheelchair accessible, making nature's beauty available to everyone. Regardless of whether you're out for a quick stroll or an afternoon hike, these trails connect you to all corners of the park year-round.

Tree Lover's Paradise

The arboretum on the north side (Worcester Road, Palo) features over 250 species of trees and shrubs. Home to more than 250 species of trees and shrubs - both native and exotic - it's a botanical wonderland. The butterfly garden adds another layer of charm, drawing in colorful winged visitors throughout the warm months.

Informative signs help you identify different trees and plants as you wander the peaceful paths. Spring brings spectacular crab apple blossoms and fragrant lilacs, while fall transforms the arboretum into a canvas of red, orange, and gold. Thoughtfully placed benches invite you to sit, breathe, and simply enjoy the natural surroundings.

Playground That Wows

The new playground has quickly become a local favorite. This isn't your average swing-and-slide setup. Kids can zoom down zip lines, tackle unique climbing structures, try out different types of swings, and race through enclosed slides.

Thoughtfully designed with different zones for various age groups, both toddlers and older children can find age-appropriate challenges. Parents appreciate the cushioned ground surface that replaces traditional woodchips, making tumbles a lot less painful. Many families from Cedar Rapids visit specifically for this playground.

Sleep Under the Stars

Want to extend your stay? The north side of the park (Worcester Road, Palo) features a well-maintained modern campground with electricity, water hookups, a convenient dump station, and clean shower facilities.

For those seeking a more rustic experience, the "pack-in" group campground can be reserved for larger gatherings - it accommodates up to 15 tents or 45 people. The camping season typically runs from April 15 to October 15, weather permitting.

All the Comforts

Around the park, you'll discover several welcoming picnic areas with tables meant for outdoor meals. Planning a bigger gathering? The large pavilion can be reserved and comes equipped with electrical outlets, food shelving, and a nearby fire pit - ideal for family reunions or birthday celebrations.

Modern restroom facilities are strategically placed near high-traffic areas like the playground, trails, and picnic spots. The water fountains even feature bottle refill stations - a thoughtful touch for hikers and cyclists.

Bringing your four-legged friend? Dogs can run free in the designated off-leash area or join you on the trails (leashed, please). Cyclists will appreciate the bike repair station available for quick fixes while exploring the trail system.

Good to Know

Morgan Creek operates on a carry-in, carry-out principle for waste - meaning you should plan to take your trash with you when you leave. You'll come across limited trash receptacles in the restroom buildings, but embracing this eco-friendly practice helps keep the park beautiful for everyone.

The park welcomes visitors year-round from 4AM-10:30PM daily.
