About the Location
A Park With History
Tucked away in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Redmond Park carries a rich backstory dating back to the late 1800s. Originally called Bever Park (after the family who developed the area), it got its current name in honor of Mayor John C. Redmond when the Bever family donated land for what became the present-day Bever Park elsewhere in the city.
Neighborhood Gathering Spot
Found in the heart of the Wellington Heights neighborhood, this park has been bringing people together for generations. Back in its early days, locals would gather for evening parties under the novelty of electric lights, surrounded by flourishing flower displays. The grounds also became home turf for community football and baseball teams - a tradition of recreation that continues today.
Historical Gem
One of the park's standout features is the Soutter Fountain, an ornate water trough gifted by the Soutter family in the 20th century. After being temporarily relocated to the Water Works building, neighborhood advocates successfully campaigned to bring the fountain back to its rightful home. Today, the garden surrounding this historical piece is lovingly maintained by neighborhood volunteers - a testament to how much the community cares about preserving this special space.
What You'll Find Today
If you're visiting during warmer months, the splash pad is a hit with kids looking to cool off. The generous open grassy area gives you plenty of room to throw a frisbee, kick a ball around, or simply spread out a blanket for a lazy afternoon. Several picnic tables make it easy to enjoy lunch or an early dinner outdoors, and yes, there's a trash can available (the little things matter!).
For the Little Ones
The park received a welcome update in 2021 with plans for a new playground structure designed with inclusivity in mind. The play area features two bay swings with different seat options to accommodate various needs, a challenging net climber for the adventurous types, and a good old-fashioned teeter-totter that brings a bit of nostalgic play to the modern playground. The design allows children of all abilities to play together.
Redmond Park is part of Cedar Rapids' park system, which includes over 4,000 acres of green space throughout the city.
