Location and History

American Legion Park honors veterans while serving as a popular community space, spreading across 26 acres at the corner of 4th Street and Vine Street in the Historic Valley Junction area of West Des Moines, Iowa - making it one of the city's oldest and most charming parks.

Despite its modest size, the park offers a variety of amenities and typically doesn't feel overcrowded.

Play Areas

American Legion Park has several options for children. The playground features separate structures designed specifically for the 2-5 crowd and their older 5-12 counterparts. With plenty of climbing equipment, it's a hit with the younger adventurers in your family. Wood chips cushion the play area for those inevitable tumbles.

Right next to the playground sits the splash pad - a summer lifesaver that runs daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day. On hot Iowa summer days, this water feature is a popular spot for families looking to cool off.

Sports Facilities

The park offers several options for sports activities. Shoot some hoops on the full-court basketball area, practice your ollies at the skate park (perfect for beginners and veterans alike), or serve up a match at the lighted tennis court that doubles as a pickleball court.

The park rounds out its athletic offerings with softball and baseball fields, plus an open playfield that's well-suited for impromptu soccer games. The skate park is well-suited for beginners who can practice in a less intimidating environment.

Amenities

When you need a break, settle in under the shade of the park's mature trees, where plenty of seating and picnic areas await. Planning a gathering? The shelter with picnic tables can be rented for a reasonable fee - it's a local favorite for birthday celebrations and family reunions.

You'll also find clean restroom facilities typically open from mid-April to mid-October. The park staff does an excellent job keeping these facilities well-maintained throughout the season.

Getting to and around American Legion Park is a breeze. A dedicated parking lot welcomes visitors, with recent expansions adding even more spaces.

For the active crowd, the park connects directly to the Jordan Creek Trail, making it a fantastic pit stop during a longer ride or walk. If you're looking for a quick exercise option, the quarter-mile walking loop within the park offers a convenient circuit.

Community Features

The park is an important part of the West Des Moines community. During summer weekdays, free lunches are available for children, further cementing its role as a neighborhood gathering place.

The city takes pride in maintaining American Legion Park, regularly updating equipment and facilities.
