Fresh Take on a Renovated Urban Escape
Tucked just south of the East Village area, Cohen Park has recently transformed from a quiet neighborhood spot into something quite special. Following major renovations in 2023-2024, this compact green space now offers unique features you might not expect to find in a small community park.
Climb On!
What makes this park stand out are three cement boulders designed for climbing enthusiasts of all levels. Regardless of whether you're a complete beginner curious about bouldering or someone looking to perfect those climbing techniques, these artificial boulders have something to offer you.
The boulders sit atop a woodchip base that provides some cushioning for inevitable falls, but bringing your own crash pad isn't a bad idea if you're planning to get serious about your climbing session.
The Wall That Plays Back
A notable addition to Cohen Park is the Sutu wall - an interactive play feature with modern technology. Made by Dutch company Yalp, this interactive wall features 16 LED panels that light up and respond when struck by a ball. It's incredibly versatile, working equally well for soccer, tennis, or basketball.
You can even download an app that keeps track of games and playing times. The electronic soccer goals component has become a particular hit with park-goers - there's something undeniably satisfying about the immediate feedback when you nail that perfect shot.
Space-Savvy Recreation
Given the park's modest size, the designers got creative with space usage. The half basketball court shares its footprint with the Sutu wall, giving you two activities in the space typically needed for one. Despite its compact nature, the court has become a popular draw for local pickup games and solo shooting practice.
A Splash of History
Amid all the modern features stands a piece of Des Moines history - the beautifully refurbished Ensign Fountain. Originally donated to the city in 1906 and placed in the park in 1915, this isn't just any fountain. It's actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places (since 1976) and provides a continuous flow of drinking water for anyone passing by.
This blend of practicality and preservation is noteworthy - a century-old fountain still fulfilling its original purpose while contributing to the park's aesthetic.
Smart Environmental Design
The recent renovations weren't just about adding fun features. The park now incorporates integrated floodwater improvements - a thoughtful collaboration between the city's Public Works and Parks departments. These enhancements make the park more resilient while ensuring it remains accessible to everyone in the community.
Bringing Your Four-Legged Friends
Your dogs are welcome to join you at Cohen Park, although you'll need to keep them leashed at all times. This keeps things safe and pleasant for everyone sharing this reinvented community space.
