About the Location

An Urban Oasis

Tucked right in the heart of downtown Des Moines, Cowles Commons is a breath of fresh air amidst the city bustle. This 2.25-acre urban space was renovated in 2015, transforming from its former identity as Nollen Plaza into the gathering space it is today. What makes it especially convenient is its prime location - you're just steps away from the Riverwalk and all those great bars, restaurants, and clubs sprinkled along 3rd, 4th Street, and Court Avenue.

The Famous Red Carpet

The Red Carpet is what everyone talks about when mentioning Cowles Commons. This expansive stretch of granite and brick runs from Capital Square all the way to the Des Moines Civic Center, creating a striking visual anchor for the space. It's not just pretty to look at - it's incredibly functional, hosting everything from concerts and festivals to markets and outdoor movie nights. The area can comfortably fit over 3,000 people when events take over.

On weekend mornings, you might catch locals participating in cardio dance classes here, adding to the community feel that makes this space so special.

Cool Off in Style

When summer temperatures climb, the Lauridsen Fountain becomes the place to be. This interactive water feature spans an impressive 120 by 50 feet and creates the most mesmerizing water displays with its 17 nozzles and 56 LED lights. The fountain produces undulating water tunnels that range from ankle-height to an impressive 20 feet high.

What's really nice is how the choreographed sprays create rolling waves that invite you to wade right in. Kids and adults alike can be found splashing around on hot days, making this splash pad a neighborhood favorite. If you stick around until evening, you'll be treated to a beautiful light show as the water features illuminate the night.

Artistic Touches

The commons thoughtfully preserved elements from its previous life, including the iconic Crusoe Umbrella sculpture by Claes Oldenburg. Alongside this familiar landmark, you'll find over 12,000 carefully selected plants arranged in a grid pattern aligned to true north - a subtle but impressive design detail.

At the southern end of the red carpet area stands a captivating light sculpture by artist Jim Campbell that adds a modern artistic element to the space. One of the more playful features has to be the collection of illuminated seesaws that light up after dark. There's something wonderfully unexpected about seeing adults and kids alike giggling on glowing seesaws in the middle of downtown.

Thoughtful Details

Throughout the commons, you'll discover 71 precast benches, each featuring a different inspirational message. These provide not just a place to rest, but moments of reflection as you explore the space. The whole area connects Des Moines' East Village and Western Gateway, helping tie the downtown area together.

Good to Know

Dog lovers will appreciate that four-legged friends are welcome here - leashed pets can enjoy the commons and even cool off in the water features. You can find waste disposal bags readily available throughout the area, making cleanup hassle-free.

If you're attending an event, portable restrooms are typically available on-site. One thing to keep in mind: while the open design creates a wonderful sense of space, shade is limited. You might want to bring a hat or sunscreen if you're planning to spend a summer afternoon here.
