About the Location

Urban Oasis

Cowles Commons is a renovated outdoor space located in the heart of downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Formerly known as Nollen Plaza, this 2.25-acre urban park underwent a significant transformation in 2015 to become a multifunctional civic gathering place.

The Red Carpet

The centerpiece of Cowles Commons is the Red Carpet, a expansive granite and brick surface that extends from Capital Square to the Des Moines Civic Center. This area serves as a versatile venue for various events, including concerts, festivals, markets, and outdoor film screenings, with the capacity to host over 3,000 visitors.

Water Features

One of the park's notable features is the Lauridsen Fountain, an interactive water feature spanning 120 by 50 feet. The zero-depth fountain incorporates 17 nozzles and 56 LED lights, creating an illuminated undulating water tunnel that ranges from two to 20 feet high.

The fountain's choreographed sprays produce rolling waves of movement, inviting pedestrians to wade and explore.

Art and Design

Cowles Commons retains some elements from its previous incarnation, including the iconic Crusoe Umbrella sculpture by artist Claes Oldenburg. The park also features new native and garden plantings, with over 12,000 plants specifically placed for color and location within a grid pattern aligned to true north.

At the south end of the red carpet area stands a large light sculpture by artist Jim Campbell, adding a dynamic visual element to the park.

Thoughtful Details

The space includes 71 precast benches, each engraved with a different inspirational message, providing seating and contemplative spots throughout the commons. Designed to be a world-class cultural and urban destination, Cowles Commons serves as an important link between Des Moines' East Village and Western Gateway, enhancing the downtown area's connectivity and vibrancy.
