Situated in Des Moines, this 11-acre green space has a little something for everyone. The park features two distinct playground areas that cater to different age groups, which is pretty thoughtful.

There's a cozy toddler-sized playground complete with baby swings and a bouncy elephant ride that the little ones seem to adore. Just a short walk away, older kids can enjoy a larger playground with multiple slides and swing options. What we really appreciate is that both play areas include inclusive swings that accommodate children of all abilities - it's these small details that make a big difference.

If tennis is your thing, you'll come across courts ready for your next match. The park also offers plenty of open green space where you can fly a kite, toss a frisbee, or just spread out a blanket and enjoy the day. Mature trees dot the landscape, providing much-needed shade during those warm Iowa afternoons.

Splashing Around

When summer hits, Ashby Park really comes alive with its wading pool and sprayground combination. The wading pool features fountain sprayers in the middle and sits under the natural canopy of trees - great for keeping cool while the kids play.

Many consider this one of the best splash areas in the Des Moines metro, thanks to its unique mix of standing water (about 1'4" deep) and spray features. During the busy season, staff keep an eye on the area for added safety. You can enjoy these water features from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.

Natural Escape

If you're looking to connect with nature, take a stroll on the park's nature trail. Access it behind the shaded shelter and you'll discover small bridges, gentle hills, and a stream winding through wooded sections. The path is especially beautiful when the Redbud trees burst into bloom - definitely worth capturing a photo or two.

The trail offers a peaceful retreat for walks and nature exploration. It's great for family adventures, however you might need to hop across a small creek in a few spots. Throughout the park, you'll also notice several rain gardens that not only look pretty but serve an environmental purpose. They're a nice touch for anyone interested in sustainable landscaping.

Ashby Park makes gathering easy with its shaded shelter and multiple picnic tables - an ideal setup for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or casual get-togethers. The shelter area comes equipped with a drinking fountain, a park grill for those who want to cook out, and clean restroom facilities nearby.

The restrooms include changing areas that are particularly useful after splashing in the water features. Like the splash pad, these facilities typically operate seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The park's well-maintained grounds and thoughtful layout make it a go-to spot for visitors of all ages looking to enjoy some outdoor time.
