About the Location
An Urban Retreat
Tucked into the heart of Des Moines, EMC Downtown Park has been breathing fresh life into the city center since June 2023. This charming pocket park sits near the Greater Des Moines Partnership building, offering a welcome splash of green amid the urban landscape. For the 2,400+ residents living within a 10-minute stroll, it's become a backyard they never had to mow.
From Shopping to Swinging
What once housed the bustling Younkers department store now invites visitors to play and unwind. The transformation reflects EMC Insurance Companies' contribution to downtown development. Through their partnership with Des Moines Parks and Recreation, they've added a green space to the downtown area.
Something for Everyone
Despite its compact size, this park packs in plenty of fun. Basketball enthusiasts can shoot some hoops on the basketball court, while those bitten by the pickleball bug can enjoy the dedicated pickleball court.
Not feeling particularly athletic? Pull up a seat at one of the chess and checkers tables, challenge a friend to table tennis, or show off your aim with a game of cornhole. The bench swings offer an excellent perch for people-watching or simply enjoying a quiet moment. Just note that the trees are still growing, so you might want to bring a hat on sunny days until they fill out with more shade.
Kid-Friendly Corner
The little ones haven't been forgotten. A compact playground area features climbing equipment where kids can burn off energy and test their agility. The metal play fixtures might not be elaborate, but they provide just enough entertainment for a quick play session during a downtown outing.
Thoughtfully Designed
Safety clearly factored into the park's design, with rubber-coated surfaces cushioning the play areas - a detail parents will appreciate. Beyond the practical considerations, there's something refreshing about finding this green oasis amid downtown's architecture. It's not just a place to play - it's a small but significant contribution to making Des Moines more livable, one bench swing at a time.
