About the Location
A Piece of History
Situated in West Des Moines, Huston Ridge Park carries a name with deep roots in the area. It's named after the Huston family, early pioneers who made their mark in Dallas County. James B. Huston, the family's patriarch, wasn't just building a home - he created a community hub that served as a stagecoach station, tavern, post office, and even played a role in history as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
This cozy 2.43-acre green space joined the city's park family gradually between 2007 and 2012. If you're interested in local history, you might want to check out the Huston Cemetery too - it's less than half a mile southwest, just past Mills Civic Parkway.
Play Space for Everyone
The playground is divided into separate areas for younger children (ages 2-5) and older kids (5-12). The playground is thoughtfully split into areas for the little ones (ages 2-5) and bigger kids (5-12).
Need to burn off some energy? The park offers a generous open playfield that's excellent for impromptu games of frisbee, soccer, or whatever sport strikes your fancy. Basketball enthusiasts can shoot some hoops at the park's court (though note there's no lighting for evening games).
Take a Break
When you need a moment to catch your breath or the family's getting hungry, head over to the park's shelter. It works on a first-come basis (no reservations needed), and comes equipped with a grill - meant for those weekend cookouts or birthday celebrations.
The park's location in the Jordan Creek area makes it easily accessible for locals and a nice detour for those visiting nearby attractions. It's one of those versatile community spaces that doesn't try to be flashy but offers just what is needed for a pleasant afternoon outdoors.
