About the Location
Park Overview
Willow Springs Park is a neighborhood park located in West Des Moines, Iowa. Opened in 1999, this 8-acre park is situated on the southwestern side of the city, designed to serve residents within walking distance.
Environmental Features
The park features a unique bioswale on its north side, which serves as a channel to direct stormwater runoff eastward into a larger stormwater basin. This design helps filter out debris and pollutants before the water is released into Ponderosa Creek, which borders the park to the southeast.
Trails
A notable feature of Willow Springs Park is its 0.38-mile loop trail, which also acts as a connector to the Westridge Greenway Trail. This multi-use trail provides opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling.
Recreational Facilities
The park includes various recreational facilities catering to different age groups and interests. There is play equipment with separate sections for 2-5 year-olds and 5-12 year-olds.
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the non-lighted basketball court and a tennis court that is also striped for pickleball. A large open playfield and a backstop are available for casual sports and games.
Amenities
Willow Springs Park also offers amenities for relaxation and gatherings. These include a picnic shelter with a grill, which is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Restroom facilities are open from April 15 to October 15, weather permitting.
Art and Parking
The park features a piece of public artwork called "American Dreamer," adding a cultural element to the recreational space. A parking lot is available for visitors arriving by car.
