About the Location
Park Overview
Situated in West Des Moines, Iowa, Willow Springs Park is a charming neighborhood green space that's been bringing joy to locals since 1999. At 8 acres, it's not the biggest park you'll find, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character. This well-kept community spot serves primarily those living within a pleasant stroll of its borders, and despite its modest footprint, you'll notice right away how beautifully maintained the grounds are.
Environmental Features
On the north side, you can find a bioswale - nature's water filter - channeling stormwater eastward into a larger basin. It's not just pretty to look at; it actually serves an important purpose by catching debris and pollutants before water makes its way to Ponderosa Creek, which meanders along the park's southeastern edge.
Trails
Feel like stretching your legs? The park has a 0.38-mile loop trail that's great for a quick stroll. It also connects to the Westridge Greenway Trail, giving you options to extend your adventure. The smooth, paved surface works well for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and yes, even roller skaters. For those wanting to go the extra mile (literally), the north end links up with the Jordan Creek Trail, opening up possibilities for 2+ mile walks.
Playground
The playground has a hot air balloon theme that children seem to love. We love how thoughtfully it's designed, with separate equipment zones for the littles (ages 2-5) and the bigs (ages 5-12).
One particularly nice touch: instead of traditional mulch or gravel, the play area features a soft asphalt surface. No more emptying shoes full of playground debris or worrying about scraped knees!
Recreational Facilities
Sports enthusiasts, you haven't been forgotten. The park features a non-lighted basketball court and a versatile tennis court that's also marked for pickleball when you're in the mood to switch things up. There's a spacious open field with a backstop for impromptu games, but the field maintenance can occasionally be hit or miss.
Amenities
Planning to spend the day? The picnic shelter comes equipped with tables and a grill for those weekend cookouts. Just remember it's first-come, first-served, so arriving early on nice days might be wise.
You can find restrooms conveniently located near the playground, open from April 15 to October 15 (weather permitting). There's also a drinking fountain, but it occasionally takes unexpected vacations from service.
Art and Parking
Adding a touch of culture to your outdoor experience is a public artwork called "American Dreamer" - worth taking a moment to appreciate during your visit. As for parking, you'll discover a lot that's typically spacious enough to accommodate visitors without much fuss, even on busier days.
