About the Location
Recreation Spaces
Spread across Brookview Park is a generous open play area that's ideal for impromptu frisbee games or your local team's practice sessions. Baseball and softball enthusiasts will appreciate the backstop, while soccer players can make good use of the soccer nets standing ready for your next match.
There's also a picnic shelter complete with a grill that you can reserve for your gatherings. Just a heads-up though - you won't be able to book it between June 1 and August 31, 2024, as the parking lot will be under construction during that time.
Play Areas
The playground here is a real attraction for families with little ones. Shared with Brookview Elementary School, the equipment is thoughtfully designed for both toddlers (ages 2-5) and older kids (5-12). If you've got younger children, this is definitely a spot worth checking out - the playground setup really caters to the smaller adventurers.
Restrooms are available on-site too, open from mid-April through mid-October (April 15 to October 15), weather permitting.
Natural Features and Trails
One of our favorite aspects of this park is how it connects with the broader Jordan Creek Trail network. This connection lets you easily extend your walk, run, or bike ride beyond the park's boundaries. Coming from elsewhere in West Des Moines? The trail system makes getting here a breeze if you're on foot or two wheels.
The native plantings within the grounds add a nice touch of natural beauty to your visit.
Mini-Forest Project
Excitingly, May 2024 will mark the debut of Iowa's first mini-forest right here at Brookview Park. Covering about 2,800 square feet (roughly the size of a tennis court), this innovative project aims to create a dense woodland area packed with biodiversity, using only native species.
What makes this even more special is the community involvement - local students from Brookview Elementary and volunteers from around the area will be helping with the planting efforts.
Additional Information
The park sits right next to Brookview Elementary School and represents a thoughtful partnership between West Des Moines and the Waukee Community School District. When school's not in session, you can access two additional playgrounds on the school grounds that connect directly to the park.
There's a spacious parking lot that makes visits convenient. Note that since the park neighbors a school, alcohol isn't allowed anywhere within Brookview Park.
