About the Location
Park Overview
Found in the south-central part of West Des Moines, Scenic Valley Park has been a local favorite since 1999. This 8.27-acre green space provides a peaceful retreat from city life, with plenty of room to stretch your legs. After a recent makeover, the park now sports modern amenities that make it appealing whether you're eight or eighty.
Trails and Walking Paths
If you're looking for a quick nature break, The park's 0.35-mile loop trail is meant for a brisk morning walk, an afternoon jog, or just wandering while you clear your head. The path meanders through the grounds, giving you a tour of all the park has to offer.
There's also a sidewalk that runs the entire perimeter, making it a great spot to walk your four-legged friend or simply enjoy the expansive grassy areas that make up much of the park.
Playground Areas
The newly updated playground equipment is split into age-appropriate zones - one for the 2-5 year old crowd and another for 5-12 year olds. The rubber surface underneath helps prevent injuries and makes for softer landings.
While the playground is a hit with families, the equipment for the tiniest park-goers (2-5 years) could use a few more options. One tip: during summer, the rubber-like turf can get pretty hot, so morning visits are your best bet when temperatures soar.
Sports Facilities
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the basketball court and the large open field that's great for everything from frisbee to impromptu soccer games. In 2017, the park got an interesting addition - a GaGa Ball pit.
This unique feature came to life thanks to local youth Landon Stull, who pitched the idea to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. It truly was a community effort - Stull's family provided the labor while Gilcrest/Jewett Lumber Company donated materials. Today, this fenced play area is popular with local children.
Amenities
Planning to stay a while? The park's covered shelter houses several picnic tables and a grill, all available on a first-come, first-served basis. It works well for family gatherings or having lunch in the shade.
You should note that restroom facilities are only open from April 15 to October 15, weather permitting. During winter, these facilities close down. Also, the drinking fountain occasionally takes an unscheduled vacation, so bringing your own water bottle isn't a bad idea.
Community Use
Scenic Valley Park has evolved into something of a community hub over the years. Some people come to catch Pokémon, others to shoot hoops, and many just to let their kids burn off energy on the playground.
The park accommodates many different activities in one space, whether you want to exercise, play, relax, or connect with nature without leaving the city.
