About the Location
Park Overview
Established in 1999, this 8.27-acre park has become a popular destination for local families and outdoor enthusiasts. The park is situated in the south-central part of West Des Moines, offering a serene environment away from the bustle of the city.
Trails and Walking Paths
One of the park's notable features is its 0.35-mile loop trail, which provides visitors with an opportunity for walking, jogging, or casual strolling. The trail winds through the park, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings and green spaces.
Playground Areas
Scenic Valley Park caters to various age groups with its playground equipment, which includes separate sections for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds. The play areas are set on a rubber surface, ensuring safety for children at play.
Sports Facilities
For sports enthusiasts, the park features a non-lighted basketball court and a large open playfield suitable for various activities. In 2017, the park added a unique feature – a GaGa Ball pit.
This addition came about through the initiative of a local youth, Landon Stull, who presented the idea to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The project was a community effort, with Stull's family donating the labor and Gilcrest/Jewett Lumber Company providing the materials.
Amenities
The park also includes amenities for picnicking and relaxation. A picnic shelter with a grill is available on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing families and groups to enjoy outdoor meals.
Restroom facilities are accessible from April 15 to October 15, weather permitting. Scenic Valley Park's diverse offerings make it a versatile space for community recreation, providing opportunities for play, sports, relaxation, and connection with nature in the heart of West Des Moines.
