Historical Background
The park's history dates back to the mid-20th century when the area was used for mining operations. In the 1990s, the City of West Des Moines, in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, began developing the former mining site into a public park.
This transformation has turned what was once an industrial area into a thriving recreational space.
Natural Environment
Raccoon River Park features a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, prairies, and wetlands, providing habitats for numerous wildlife species. The park is particularly known for its bird population, with over 180 confirmed species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers.
Water Recreation
