About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Riverview Park isn't just your average green space - it's a piece of Des Moines history dating back to 1915 when it welcomed visitors as an amusement park. For over 60 years, families created memories here until the rides stopped turning in 1978.
The recent renovation honors this nostalgic past. The playground equipment cleverly mimics those vintage amusement rides, and you can't miss the partial rollercoaster track structure near the entrance - a subtle nod to the park's carnival days that connects today's kids with their grandparents' childhood memories.
Fresh Beginnings
The 2021-2022 complete renovation has updated this historic space. At the heart of the renovation is an inclusive playground funded by Variety Children's of Iowa that truly welcomes everyone to play.
The ground beneath your feet here feels almost cloud-like - a special rubber and turf mix that's surprisingly soft and squishy. It's the kind of thoughtful touch that lets parents relax a bit while kids go wild on the equipment.
Play for Everyone
The playground here is notably accessible. You can find a merry-go-round with dedicated spaces for two wheelchairs, bucket swings featuring pull-down support braces, and even a zip line with a bucket swing option for kids who need extra support.
The little ones have their own shaded section with rocking horses, spinning seats, and a ground-level merry-go-round. There's also a creative zone with musical instruments where kids can explore their artistic side.
The climbing structures accommodate mobility devices, making this a highly inclusive play space. Most of the equipment hits the sweet spot for kids between 2 and 12 years old.
Nature's Backdrop
Situated along the Des Moines River, the park offers play equipment that's also a place to connect with nature too. A network of paved trails links Riverview to nearby McHenry Park, making it part of the larger Des Moines trail system.
These paths are well-suited for a casual stroll or morning jog. While the newly planted trees are still growing into their full potential, the trails already provide a peaceful escape from city life.
Live Entertainment
The Riverview Amphitheater anchors the park as an outdoor entertainment venue. Its design works with the natural landscape to provide good views from most seating areas.
On summer evenings, the stage comes alive with multicolored lighting that transforms performances. The Rendezvous on Riverview concert series brings the community together on Friday nights during summer, often with food trucks and drinks available. If you're around for July 4th celebrations, you might catch a fireworks display lighting up the river view.
Community Heart
Beyond its attractions, Riverview Park has open spaces for picnics, casual games, or simply lounging on the grass. It has evolved from historic amusement park to modern community space while maintaining connections to its past.
Parents will appreciate the thoughtfully placed benches throughout the playground areas. Note that many areas receive full sun exposure, so it's smart to bring water, sunscreen, and maybe portable shade during those hot Iowa summer days.
Practical Matters
You'll discover permanent restrooms available, but they're located outside the main playground area across a bridge. The women's restroom includes a full-size changing table that accommodates larger children or adults with disabilities - another thoughtful inclusive feature.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM, making it accessible whether you're an early bird jogger or evening concert-goer. Your four-legged friends are welcome too - just keep them leashed as you explore this reimagined piece of Des Moines history together.
