The Hansen Company, a local construction firm, gifted their services to create this public space while celebrating their 30th anniversary - a birthday present for the whole city, as it were. The unique triangular shape wasn't a design choice but simply followed the natural convergence of downtown streets, making the most of urban geography.

Hansen Triangle Park sits at the corner of Grand and 2nd Avenue in downtown Des Moines. This little green space might be small, but it provides a welcome retreat from the concrete surrounding it.

A Thoughtful Design

As you wander through the park, you'll notice the thoughtfully designed limestone terraces that seem to flow naturally through the space. These native stone walls complement the carefully selected plantings, creating a mini-ecosystem that stands in beautiful contrast to the surrounding office buildings and city streets.

Art With Purpose

What really makes Hansen Triangle special is its role as home to "A Monumental Journey," an impressive 30-foot sculpture created by acclaimed artist Kerry James Marshall. Unveiled in 2018, this striking public artwork isn't just visually interesting - it tells an important story, honoring the African American lawyers who founded the National Bar Association in Des Moines back in 1925.

The sculpture takes inspiration from West African Yoruba talking drums, symbolizing how ideas and stories travel across time and distance. It's worth taking a moment to appreciate both the artistry and the history captured in this monumental piece as you enjoy the park.
