About the Location
Lake Vibes
Situated in the heart of Des Moines, this 167-acre space centers around a sprawling 100-acre lake - originally an oxbow of the Raccoon River that was expanded through sand and gravel mining back in the early 1900s.
If fishing's your thing, you can find black crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass swimming beneath the surface. When the weather warms up, you can rent watercraft - canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and paddle boats. Don't worry if you're new to paddling; life jackets come with every rental.
The north shore beach offers a perfect spot for swimming or just lounging in the sand. If you're not in the mood to bake in the sun, you'll appreciate the shade trees and picnic tables at the edge of the beach area - excellent for keeping an eye on friends or family in the water. There's a concession stand nearby that's open during summer months.
Trails Worth Traveling
A highlight of Gray's Lake is the 1.9-mile Kruidenier Trail circling the water. This well-lit paved path features the impressive 1,400-foot Chris and Marcie Coleman Bridge that spans across the lake.
Come nightfall, the bridge lights up with colors that reflect on the water, with the downtown Des Moines skyline as a backdrop. The evening lighting makes for a pleasant nighttime visit.
The park represents a central hub in Des Moines' extensive trail network, connecting to other parks and urban areas. No matter if you're walking, jogging, cycling, or rollerblading, you'll be joining the estimated million people who visit annually. Locals affectionately call circling the lake "doing the loop" - a daily ritual for many Des Moines residents. For those wanting to extend their adventure, an underpass tunnel connects directly to Waterworks Park.
Family-Friendly Features
Gray's Lake Park has activities for all ages. Kids can burn off energy at the playground with its swings and climbing equipment, while the whole family can gather at one of the many picnic areas scattered within the grounds.
Planning a longer stay? Several areas come equipped with charcoal grills and offer plenty of shade - great for family reunions or casual get-togethers. You'll find restroom facilities conveniently located around the lake, particularly near the beach and other busy spots. Drinking fountains are also strategically placed around the park for when you need to hydrate.
Beyond the Everyday
All year long, the park hosts a variety of activities from outdoor yoga classes to bird-watching sessions, 5K races, and seasonal celebrations.
Its location near downtown makes it an ideal lunch escape for office workers and a natural starting point for tourists exploring Des Moines.
While it's been a city park since 1970, Gray's Lake Park really came into its own after a major post-flood renovation in 1993, supported by both public funds and private donations. This revitalization did more than improve the park - it helped spark further investment in downtown Des Moines.
Today, this urban park offers a natural setting within the city limits.
