About the Location
Recreational Offerings
Located in Des Moines, Iowa, Pete Crivaro Park is that neighborhood green space you might not have heard about yet. This urban oasis on E Railroad Avenue offers a little something for everyone, whether you're looking to burn some energy or just chill for an afternoon.
The park centers around a pleasant open area that's meant for those days when you just need to escape the concrete jungle. It's kept nicely clean and tidy - nothing fancy, but definitely a peaceful spot to catch your breath.
Disc Golf for Everyone
If you've ever wanted to try disc golf, this is your spot. The park has a 9-hole disc golf course that's been around since 2007. It's wonderfully short and open - ideal if you're just getting started or if you're an old pro looking to work on those precision shots.
You'll appreciate the concrete tee pads and Mach III targets that give the course a solid foundation. It's become something of a local favorite for beginners or for quick practice sessions when you don't have time for a full 18 holes.
Kid-Friendly Fun
Got little ones in tow? The playground here features a rubber footing surface and a climbing web that kids seem to love. The soft turf is a nice touch - fewer scraped knees mean more playtime.
When summer heats up, the wading pool and splash pad become the place to be. It's a popular splash spot on Des Moines' south side. There's usually park staff keeping an eye on things, which adds a nice layer of safety.
Get Moving
If basketball is more your speed, there's a court with non-adjustable hoops waiting for your next game. The park also features paved trails that are fantastic for a casual stroll or a brisk walk to get your steps in.
For cyclists, the park connects to the city's bike trail system, making it a nice stopping point during a longer ride around Des Moines.
Gather and Relax
Pete Crivaro Park works well for group gatherings. The shaded shelters can be reserved for everything from birthday parties to family reunions, and at rates that won't break the bank.
You'll come across grills and picnic tables scattered throughout, fantastic for those impromptu cookouts or planned potlucks. There's plenty of seating with good shade coverage, so you can enjoy being outdoors without baking in the sun.
The restrooms are conveniently located near the splash pad, however they sometimes run out of soap (maybe bring some hand sanitizer just in case). The drinking fountains work well during splash pad season.
Worth Knowing
While Pete Crivaro isn't the biggest park in Des Moines, it packs a lot into its modest footprint. An unexpected bonus? You can catch a glimpse of the Iowa State Capitol while you're there - a little bit of architectural grandeur to complement your outdoor experience.
Note that if you're planning to hit the splash pad or wading pool, they typically don't open until mid-morning (around 11:30 AM) and hours vary seasonally, so it's worth checking current times before you head out with towels and swimsuits in tow.
