About the Location

A Bit of History & Layout

Back in 1960, the Cessna Aircraft Company gifted this green space to Wichita. Cessna West is actually one half of a matched set - two triangular parks created when the Kansas Turnpike sliced through town. While its northeastern twin focuses on sports facilities, this western park leans into leisure and natural beauty.

Don't let first impressions fool you - this park is deceptively spacious. What might look modest from the road unfolds into generous grounds once you're inside. Even on busy days, the park manages to feel lively but never cramped, with plenty of room for everyone to spread out.

Get Outside and Play

Cessna West offers a little bit of everything for outdoor lovers. The sprawling green spaces create a peaceful backdrop for picnics, casual walks, or just lounging around with a good book.

If you're looking to get your heart rate up, the various trails wind through the park, including access to the Gypsum Creek Bicycle Path. This multi-use trail accommodates walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike - a good alternative to indoor exercise.

Natural Escape

Need a nature fix? The Wichita Wild Habitat Area within the park lets you connect with local plants and wildlife in a more natural, less manicured environment.

The wooded areas and meandering creek create different landscapes to explore. The section with picnic tables nestled among the trees offers a quiet spot to unwind, providing a brief escape from city surroundings.

Practical Stuff

You can find all the essentials here: picnic shelters for gatherings, scattered tables for impromptu lunches, and restrooms when nature calls in the less poetic sense.

Kids will make a beeline for the large playground that offers plenty of space to climb, slide, and burn off endless energy.

Disc Golf Paradise

Since 2017, disc golf enthusiasts have flocked to the park's 18-hole course. With a practice basket available, it's designed to welcome beginners while still giving experienced players something to work for.

The course has a nice variety - the front nine weaves through trees in a tighter layout, while the back nine opens up for longer throws. A few water hazards add some strategic challenge to keep things interesting.

The course is well-maintained with clear markings, but you should know that some tee pads have shifted over time, which might affect your footing. One nice perk: the ground is mercifully free of stickers, so you can comfortably play in sandals if that's your preference.
