About the Location

History and Namesake

Back in 1980, this green space came to life, later being named after hometown hero Lynette Woodard in 1984.

Woodard, a Wichita native born in 1959, isn't just any basketball player. She helped the U.S. women's team snag gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and broke barriers as the first woman to join the legendary Harlem Globetrotters. Talk about shattering glass ceilings!

Facilities and Amenities

The park sits right next to the Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center, creating a nice one-stop spot for both indoor and outdoor recreation.

There are outdoor activity courts where you can shoot some hoops or play tennis, a playground with good equipment for children, and well-maintained sports fields.

Need a break? The park offers clean, spacious restrooms and several picnic areas scattered throughout - meant for family lunches or catching up with friends on a sunny afternoon.

Community Center

The Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center isn't just a building next door - it's the heart of community support in the area. Inside, you'll discover a computer lab offering free internet access and printing (yes, free printing!).

Need help with job hunting or updating your resume? The staff provides assistance with this, as well as guidance on housing options and food assistance programs.

If you're looking to learn something new, the center has evolved to include judo, karate, and kick-boxing classes - great ways to stay fit while picking up some self-defense skills.

Community Significance

Built as part of the Model Cities Program and handed over to the Board of Park Commissioners in 1980, this park has historical significance to the area.

It honors one of Wichita's sporting legends while providing a place for recreation and community gatherings.

Old-timers might remember when Friday night skating events made this park the place to be. While activities have changed over the years, the park remains an important neighborhood hub. The grounds offer space for physical activity and social interaction in the neighborhood.
