Established in 1980, the park was named in honor of Olympic basketball star Lynette Woodard in 1984.

Woodard, born in Wichita in 1959, was a member of the U.S. women's basketball team that won gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and became the first female member of the Harlem Globetrotters.
