About the Location
A Bit of History
Located in Wichita, Kansas, Sycamore Park spreads across three parcels of land that the city scooped up back in 1971 and 1972. This 13.4-acre green haven got its start with help from Land and Water Conservation Funds courtesy of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the National Park Service.
What's nice about this spot is that it rarely gets packed with people - it's one of those peaceful neighborhood parks where you can actually hear yourself think.
Get Your Game On
If you're feeling active, Sycamore offers several options. There's a softball diamond complete with dugouts and bleachers for the spectators in your life. The basketball court is kept in good shape, and there are multi-use court areas where you can get creative with your sports options.
For the kiddos, there's a children's playground featuring a pretty cool climbing rope structure. It's best suited for little ones around 4 years and up. Just a heads-up though - the playground has a sand surface that, while safe for tumbles, has a knack for finding its way into shoes and making walking a bit of a sandy adventure.
Picnic Paradise
Looking for a spot to enjoy lunch outdoors? The park features an ADA-accessible open shelter (it looks like a gazebo) with picnic tables. There's a drinking fountain nearby too, which comes in handy for staying hydrated or rinsing sticky fingers after snacks.
You'll also find additional picnic tables scattered throughout the grounds, giving you options for where to set up your outdoor meal. The covered area is particularly nice when you need a break from the sun or if there's a light drizzle but you're not ready to head indoors.
Room to Roam
One of the best things about Sycamore Park is the generous open space. Toss a frisbee around, kick a soccer ball, or just stretch out on the grass and cloud-watch - there's room for it all. The park's walking paths are well-maintained and accessible, making it a solid choice for your daily constitutional.
Dog owners tend to gravitate here since the park is dog-friendly with plenty of space for four-legged friends to explore. Just remember to bring your own clean-up bags, as the park doesn't provide them.
Good to Know
The city maintenance crew does a pretty good job keeping the place tidy, but you might spot some litter here and there on busy weekends. One important thing to note: there are no restroom facilities at Sycamore Park, so plan accordingly.
All in all, Sycamore Park strikes that sweet balance between activity and relaxation. Regardless of whether you're watching kids scramble up the rope structure, getting in your daily steps on the walking paths, or simply sitting under a tree with a good book, this community space has a little something for everyone.
