About the Location
Park History
Nestled in the heart of Wichita, Kansas, Osage Park spans a generous 20 acres of public recreational space. The city acquired this green oasis back in 1957 and developed it with the help of Land and Water Conservation Funds from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the National Park Service.
Facilities and Amenities
Just off West 31st Street, Osage Park has something for everyone. The playground features a rubber pour-in-place safety surface - helpful for minimizing those inevitable tumbles. The play area sits partially in the shade, so you won't have to worry about the Kansas sun becoming too intense during playtime.
Sports lovers haven't been forgotten. There's a well-lit basketball court for those evening games, and softball players can choose between two diamonds complete with dugouts and bleachers for spectators. Only the east diamond has lights for nighttime play, while both feature dirt infields for that authentic feel.
Fancy a tennis match? The park offers two lighted tennis courts, with one including a practice wall for solo players looking to perfect their backhand. There are also dedicated pickleball courts that are kept in good condition.
Water Features
When summer temperatures climb, the interactive water fountain (or splash pad as the locals call it) becomes the park's main attraction. Open daily from 10 am to 8 pm, it's a great spot to cool down - just remember to leave your four-legged friends at home for this one. The spray cannons and hoops make the water experience more interactive.
Relaxation Areas
Not in the mood for activity? Osage Park has plenty of spots to unwind. Several covered picnic areas with tables dot the landscape, making an ideal setting for family get-togethers or celebrating special occasions. Some tables enjoy natural shade, and you'll find barbecue pits available if you're craving some grilled treats.
The park's winding paths invite casual strolls, whether you're walking your dog or simply seeking a peaceful moment among the greenery. Many people find joy in simply sitting back and watching the community come alive around them - from families playing to athletes practicing their skills.
Community Use
The park's open areas are used for small events and family celebrations, while the former Osage Recreation Center building provides space for community gatherings and private functions like baby showers and birthday parties.
Visitor Information
You'll come across parking in the 94-stall paved lot on the east side of the park, however, be aware that you might need to walk a bit to reach certain amenities. When nature calls, restroom facilities are available inside the former Osage Recreation Center building and are generally kept clean.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6 AM to midnight, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer, whether you're an early bird or prefer evening recreation.
