Davis Park
About Davis Park
A Fresh Community Oasis
Right next to Oliver Lewis Way in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, Davis Park offers a welcome green space in the urban landscape. This newer addition to the city's green spaces wasn't just plunked down without thought - it actually rose from the footprint of a former park that disappeared during infrastructure changes, carefully reimagined with plenty of local voices weighing in on what their neighborhood really needed.
Behind the scenes, it took a village to bring this park to life - the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet joined forces with Lexington officials and community groups like the Lexington Community Land Trust to transform ideas into reality.
Play and Recreation Spots
The playground here is modern, splashed with color, and features interesting climbing structures and a curved slide (rather than the standard straight ones). While the playground equipment still has that new-park shine, just know that on sunny days you might want to bring a hat, as shade is a bit scarce in this area.
Ball enthusiasts can enjoy the basketball court with its half-court setup. With a single hoop in good shape, it's great for a casual game or some solo practice. The park also includes a winding multi-use trail, a shaded shelter, and open grassy areas ideal for picnics or casual games of frisbee.
Gathering and Unwinding
Davis Park serves well as a laid-back spot for family time. The sheltered areas create natural conversation nooks where you can sit back, relax, and actually hear each other talk - making it just right for those small family get-togethers that don't need all the bells and whistles.
A heads-up for those planning longer visits: the park doesn't currently have grills (which would be a nice addition for those wanting to cook out), and there are no restroom facilities yet as the area continues to develop.
A Place with Roots
Beyond just making downtown Lexington prettier, Davis Park carries something deeper - it stands on the grounds of Davis Bottom, a historically significant neighborhood known for being racially integrated when such communities were rare.
The evolution of this space into today's park connects to its legacy as a place where different people came together. As the downtown green space continues to develop, Davis Park provides a place where people can play, connect, and enjoy their neighborhood.
