Thoroughbred Park
About Thoroughbred Park
A Tribute to Kentucky's Horse Heritage
Located in downtown Lexington, Thoroughbred Park covers 2.75 acres and celebrates Kentucky's deep-rooted equestrian culture. This thoughtfully crafted space celebrates the Thoroughbred racing tradition that has shaped Lexington's identity as the "Horse Capital of the World."
The park's showstoppers are the stunning bronze sculptures by artist Gwen Reardon that bring the racing world to life right before your eyes. Seven life-sized horses with jockeys frozen mid-gallop create such a convincing illusion of movement that you might do a double-take. The statues effectively capture the intensity of a race. The collection doesn't stop there - you'll also find broodmares, playful foals, and the legendary 19th-century stallion Lexington. Keep your eyes peeled for the smaller horse sculptures hidden throughout the landscaping, including a charming pony lounging in the bushes.
Forty-two plaques throughout the grounds honor important figures in Thoroughbred racing, creating an open-air museum that combines art, history, and sport. These markers tell the stories of pioneering owners, breeders, trainers, and others who left their mark on racing history.
What You'll Find There
The park unfolds in distinct sections, each with its own character. "The Meadow" offers a peaceful multilevel landscape dotted with deciduous and evergreen trees, stone walls reminiscent of classic Bluegrass horse farms, and plenty of comfortable places to sit and take it all in.
The Winner's Circle features a reflection pool with water jets and a granite plaza. For a perspective that'll make you feel like you're at the races, stand on the wall side to get that coveted "finish line" view of the racing horses. Just note that the fountains typically take a winter break when temperatures drop.
Paved trails wind through the sculptures, fountains, and landscaped areas, making this a great spot to clear your head, stretch your legs, or simply appreciate the artistry around you. The grounds are typically well-kept and clean - a welcome green oasis in the urban landscape.
Beyond a Pretty Face
Thoroughbred Park connects to Lexington's equine heritage. Its location at East Main Street and Midland Avenue carries historical weight, echoing the straightaway races that once took place on Lexington's streets back in the late 1700s.
Today, the park is both a tourist attraction and a community gathering place. It offers an educational window into Thoroughbred racing's rich history and artistry. If you're a photography enthusiast, you'll find endless opportunities to capture the remarkably detailed horse sculptures from various angles.
Planning Your Visit
You can drop by anytime between 6AM and 11PM, and the best part? It's completely free. While street parking is available nearby, including a gravel lot across the street, it can fill up during peak times. Feel free to bring your four-legged friend along - the park is dog-friendly and makes for a pleasant short walk.
Just be aware there are no restrooms or designated picnic areas within the park itself. It's ideal for a quick stop while exploring downtown Lexington. If you're visiting with kids, there's a playground across the street where they can burn off some energy.
