Gratz Park

Historic Origins

Gratz Park is named after Benjamin Gratz, an influential early Lexington businessman and hemp manufacturer. It occupies a tract of land that was established in 1781 as part of the Transylvania Seminary campus, the first university west of the Allegheny Mountains, though the school relocated after a fire in 1829.

The park is encircled by the Gratz Park Historic District, which features notable buildings such as the Hunt-Morgan House and the Bodley-Bullock House. Both homes provide a glimpse into Lexington's rich history and are open to the public for tours.
