About the Location
History and Location
E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park is a 550-acre park located in the Freys Hill area of Louisville, Kentucky. The park sits on former land of Kentucky's old Central State Hospital and was opened to the public in 1974.
It is named after Erbon Powers "Tom" Sawyer, a former Jefferson County Judge/Executive who died in office in 1969. The park has an intriguing history, as it was once home to Lakeland Insane Asylum, with a field where over 5,000 patients were reportedly buried in unmarked graves. There was also once a military installation on the grounds.
Natural Features
The park features a mix of open fields, wooded areas, and recreational facilities. Its terrain includes rolling hills and meadows, providing a natural oasis within an urban setting.
A network of hiking and biking trails wind through the park, allowing visitors to explore its diverse landscapes. For nature enthusiasts, the park offers the Goose Creek Nature Trail, a shaded path that provides opportunities for wildlife viewing and natural exploration. This lush, scenic trail follows a pleasant creek and offers a cool, shaded environment perfect for trail running or peaceful walks.
The park's expansive green spaces are well-maintained and provide a habitat for local wildlife, including deer that can often be spotted at sunset. Despite being in the middle of the metro area, the park creates a feeling of being in a wilderness setting.
Recreational Facilities
One of the park's notable features is its Olympic-sized swimming pool and splash park, which is the largest public outdoor pool in Louisville. Even when crowded, there is typically ample seating and room to swim.
The park also boasts extensive sports facilities, including tennis courts, pickleball courts (16 dedicated courts that are very popular), soccer fields, and a championship-caliber cross-country course that has hosted numerous regional and national competitions. Other athletic amenities include basketball courts, baseball/softball fields, and volleyball courts.
For BMX enthusiasts, the park features a BMX track considered one of the best in the Midwest. The park also offers an archery range with targets going out to 40 yards, recently upgraded in 2023.
Special Attractions
The park is home to an astronomy center operated by the Louisville Astronomical Society, where visitors can participate in stargazing events. Another unique feature is the Fluke Airfield, a paved airstrip for radio-controlled airplane hobbyists that hosts the annual Wings for Kids model RC Air Show every June.
For families, the park offers multiple playgrounds that have been recently expanded and upgraded. A fenced dog park is located across Freys Hill Road from the main entrance, though note that it requires membership for access.
Multiple picnic areas with covered shelters, tables, and charcoal grills are scattered throughout the park, making it ideal for gatherings. These shelters can be reserved for events and parties.
E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park functions as a community gathering place, hosting various events and educational programs throughout the year. Its diverse amenities and natural beauty make it a popular destination for both active recreation and peaceful relaxation within the Louisville metropolitan area.
