About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked away at 6201 Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Milton J. Womack Park spans 20.5 acres of recreational space. Run by BREC (Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge), this park pulls double duty as both a community gathering spot and the headquarters for BREC's operations.
The park centers around a two-story building that houses recreational facilities and administrative offices. Unlike your typical green space filled with trees and ponds, Milton J. Womack is more of a facilities-focused park - think less forest trails and more basketball courts and meeting rooms.
Recreation Center
On the west side, you can find the Milton J. Womack Recreation Center - home to a modern fitness center, an engaging recreation room, and rentable spaces including a spacious ballroom. It's not just about working out here; the center regularly hosts public meetings, including BREC's board gatherings.
If you're looking to use the fitness center, memberships are available - though despite what some materials might suggest, daily passes can be hit or miss. The ballroom has become something of a local favorite for weddings and special events, with its ample space and convenient location.
Administrative Facilities
The east side houses the Eugene A. Young Administration Offices where BREC's various departments work their magic - from planning new parks to organizing community programs across East Baton Rouge Parish.
Just a heads-up: the building layout can be a bit maze-like for first-timers. With multiple entrances and not quite enough signs pointing you where to go, you might want to allow a few extra minutes to find your way around.
Outdoor Amenities
Step outside and you'll discover a walking track, basketball courts, baseball fields, and multi-purpose fields great for casual games. Thanks to improvements completed in 2018, the park now boasts new lighted multi-use fields, bleachers, and restrooms.
The outdoor area is mostly open with limited shade - great for organized sports but perhaps not ideal for a shady summer picnic. There is a covered area with tables on the west side that works well for small get-togethers, but it's more functional than picturesque.
Community Programs
The center really shines with its community offerings, particularly the summer camps and art programs for kids that often receive glowing feedback. Just remember that many activities require signing up ahead of time, and most come with a fee.
Recent updates have also made the park more accessible with newly paved parking areas and walkways. With its mix of indoor and outdoor facilities, Milton J. Womack Park manages to serve a wide range of community needs - no matter if you're looking to work out, play ball, or host a meeting.
