About the Location
A Greenway with History
Scotlandville Parkway is a 3-mile greenway that weaves through over 130 acres of land along the I-110 corridor in Baton Rouge. Operated by BREC (Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge), this parkway has been a vital recreational space since the 1970s.
In the 1980s, the parkway was designated as a National Recreation Trail, highlighting its importance. Its original design aimed to mitigate the interstate's impact on the surrounding community while providing outdoor leisure opportunities.
Recreational Features
The parkway boasts multiuse trails totaling 8 miles, perfect for walking, jogging, and cycling. A highlight is the Scotlandville Heart Trail, a 2.5-mile path decorated with heart-shaped art pieces created by local artists and students.
This unique trail offers an engaging way to explore the scenic beauty of the Scotlandville neighborhood while promoting wellness and community engagement.
Art and Culture
Visitors can enjoy the Southern Bluffs Greenway Art Walk, where interpretive art pieces celebrate the culture and history of Southern University and the neighboring community.
These artistic elements make the parkway not just a place for physical activity but also for cultural appreciation and education.
Ongoing Revitalization
Scotlandville Parkway is currently undergoing revitalization as part of broader efforts to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity. Planned upgrades include ADA-accessible paths, restored bridges, and enhanced links to nearby community landmarks.
These improvements reflect the input of local organizations and community members, ensuring the parkway continues to serve as an integral part of the neighborhood's cultural and social landscape.
