About the Location
A Neighborhood Space in Tara Subdivision
Tucked away on Old Hammond Highway, this park managed by BREC (Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge) serves Tara Subdivision residents and Broadmoor neighbors.
A few years back, the park got a much-needed facelift as part of BREC's "Imagine Your Parks" initiative. What makes this renovation special is that it actually incorporated feedback from the Tara Civic Association - proof that sometimes community voices really do make a difference.
What You'll Find Here
If you're bringing the little ones, you'll appreciate the clean, well-maintained playground with modern equipment. The quiet setting allows you to keep an eye on the kids while resting in the shade.
Feel like getting some steps in? The paved walking trail stretches about 1.25 miles through the park, winding under mature trees that provide ample shade. It's well-suited for morning jogs or afternoon strolls when you need to clear your head.
Sports enthusiasts haven't been forgotten. There's a nicely refurbished ball field where you can play baseball or other field sports, plus a tennis court if you're in the mood for a match.
The park includes a modular skate park with equipment that's popular among local skateboarders. If you're into remote-controlled vehicles, you might even spot people racing them here when the skaters aren't around.
Scattered around the park are picnic tables, many nestled under the canopy of trees - ideal for family lunches or just enjoying a book with some fresh air.
Natural Touches
The park offers plenty of green space for running around or simply lying on the grass watching clouds drift by. A small creek meanders through the property, adding a touch of tranquility and giving kids something interesting to explore.
Perhaps the most appreciated natural feature is the abundance of shade trees, offering sweet relief during Louisiana's sweltering summer months. There's even a charming clover field that adds to the peaceful atmosphere.
Good to Know
Park management has made efforts to improve both safety and aesthetics by clearing underbrush, which helps with visibility within the grounds.
A few things to note: while dogs are welcome, you'll need to bring your own waste bags as there aren't dedicated pet stations. There are also no restroom facilities currently available, and parking can be limited on busier days.
Old Hammond Highway Park offers recreational options for different ages and interests, providing a quiet retreat in the neighborhood.
