About the Location

Extreme Sports Haven

Situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Perkins Road Community Park is a little touch of adventure managed by BREC. Locals know it as the "Extreme Sports Park" - and for good reason! This 52.2-acre park blends high-energy activities with peaceful spots, offering something for many interests.

The star of the show? A massive 30,000-square-foot concrete skate park designed by California Skateparks. Bring your skateboard, bike, inline skates, or roller skates and show off your skills! Just a stone's throw away, you can find the BMX Raceway and a 333-meter Velodrome - pretty impressive considering there are only 15 of these cycling tracks in the entire United States. If you're hitting the BMX track, remember to bring your helmet and sign a waiver. The Velodrome is free to use during daylight hours if you want to channel your inner Olympic cyclist.

Family-Friendly Attractions

Kids will go wild for the community playground with its extreme sports adventure theme. With slides, swings, and jungle gyms for various age groups, it's a hit with the little ones. The park thoughtfully features separate areas for smaller children and older kids, so everyone from toddlers to teens can find their happy place.

Fancy a more relaxed activity? The fishing pond gets stocked with fish periodically, offering a perfect spot to cast a line or simply sit back and enjoy the scenery. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife throughout the park - spotting local critters adds a fun, educational element to your visit.

Fitness and Recreation Facilities

For fitness enthusiasts, there are several options. Wind through paved walking trails, stop at outdoor fitness stations for a quick workout, or challenge a friend to tennis. The walking paths mix shaded and sunny sections, with convenient benches placed along the way when you need a breather.

Fancy something more social? The sand volleyball court and large grassy field are fantastic for impromptu games of soccer or football. In the evenings, you might catch locals playing kickball in the open fields - it's become quite the community tradition around here.

Thrill-seekers can test their mettle on the 35-foot rock climbing tower - though it's worth noting it's currently being refurbished.

Event Spaces and Natural Setting

Planning a gathering? The recreation center offers rooms for rent, while multiple pavilions with picnic tables dot the landscape for outdoor celebrations. These shaded gazebos make excellent spots to enjoy a packed lunch or family meal.

The park maintains clean, well-lit restrooms with handicap-accessible facilities - always a plus when you're spending the day outdoors. Huge shade trees create natural sanctuaries great for spreading out a blanket and enjoying some downtime.

Walking Trails and Accessibility

The extensive network of trails attracts walkers and joggers of all ages. The safe, clean environment makes it ideal for regular exercise, with paths suitable for every fitness level from casual strollers to dedicated power-walkers.

The park's greenway is a connectivity trail, opening up access to scenic biking and skating routes. The park's design effectively balances active sports facilities with tranquil natural spaces.

The trails are pet-friendly, allowing dogs to get exercise alongside their owners. Just remember to bring those waste bags!
