About the Location
History and Renaming
Formerly known as Behrman Park, this community green space is located on General Meyer Avenue in the Algiers neighborhood on the West Bank of New Orleans, Louisiana.
In 2021, as part of the New Orleans City Council Renaming project, the park was renamed to honor Morris F.X. Jeff Sr., a pioneer who developed tailored programs for African-American children during segregation. Jeff was instrumental in creating the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) in 1946 and served as the head of its "Colored Division" from 1947 until his retirement in 1986.
Recreational Facilities
The park features a variety of outdoor and indoor facilities catering to diverse recreational needs. It includes a stadium and gymnasium, providing space for various sports activities.
Visitors can also enjoy tennis courts and baseball fields, offering opportunities for both casual play and organized sports events. A track field is available for running and other track and field activities.
Swimming and Renovations
One of the park's notable features is its large outdoor swimming pool, which operates seasonally.
As of 2023, the City of New Orleans initiated an $8.2 million renovation project for the pool facilities, aiming to transform it into a state-of-the-art year-round aquatics center. The renovations include the construction of an enclosed pool area, a new outdoor splash pad, upgraded family restrooms, and new locker rooms.
Landscaping and Management
The park's grounds are adorned with tree-lined areas, providing shade and natural beauty to visitors.
Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Park is managed by the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) and operates Monday through Friday from 10AM to 9PM and Saturday from 9AM to 5PM, with closure on Sundays.
