About the Location
History and Renaming
Located on General Meyer Avenue in the Algiers neighborhood on New Orleans' West Bank, you'll find what was once known as Behrman Park. In 2021, the green space got a meaningful new identity as part of the New Orleans City Council Renaming project. It now honors Morris F.X. Jeff Sr., a true pioneer who created specialized programs for African-American children during segregation. Jeff wasn't just any community figure - he helped establish the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) in 1946 and dedicated nearly four decades of his life (1947-1986) leading its "Colored Division."
Recreational Facilities
The park offers various places to play and stay active. The centerpiece stadium and gymnasium give locals plenty of space for everything from pickup games to organized football matches.
If you're into racquet sports or baseball, you'll find tennis courts and baseball fields available. And for those who prefer to get their steps in, there's a track field ideal for running or walking at your own pace.
Aquatics Center
A highlight of the park is its swimming pool, which opens seasonally and offers swimming lessons for kids and families.
The city has big plans for this already impressive feature. As of 2023, New Orleans kicked off an $8.2 million renovation project to transform the pool area into a year-round aquatics center. When completed, it will feature an enclosed pool, an outdoor splash pad, updated family restrooms, and new locker rooms - available for use year-round.
Additional Amenities
Jumping on the latest sports trend, the park's pickleball courts have become quite the hotspot for active visitors. The park has clean, well-maintained restrooms with regularly stocked supplies.
There's updated playground equipment for children and convenient parking located close to the facilities.
Events and Community Use
On game days, the stadium comes alive as the home field for local teams, including the Edna Karr Cougars football squad. From homecoming celebrations to community ceremonies, the stadium is frequently used for neighborhood gatherings.
Need a venue? The multi-use facility is available to rent, complete with vendor spaces for food and merchandise. Getting here is easy too - the park sits right on an RTA bus line, making it accessible even if you don't drive.
Landscaping and Management
The grounds include tree-lined areas that provide shade during hot Louisiana days. The playing surfaces are regularly maintained.
The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) manages Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Park with a staff that's both professional and genuinely friendly. You can visit Monday through Friday from 10AM to 9PM or Saturday from 9AM to 5PM. The park is closed on Sundays.
