About the Location
River's Edge Retreat
Tucked away at the far end of Audubon Park in New Orleans, you can find a popular local hangout known as "The Fly" (officially Audubon Riverview Park). This sprawling green space sits right behind the Audubon Zoo and stretches along the Mississippi, where you can watch boats and barges navigate the busy river. Wondering about that quirky nickname? It comes from a butterfly-shaped river viewing shelter built back in the '60s. Though the structure was unfortunately demolished in the '80s after taking a beating from river traffic, the name stuck around in true New Orleans fashion.
Chill Vibes and Good Times
With about 800 feet of open grassy space hugging the Mississippi, The Fly is basically New Orleans' collective backyard. It's where locals spread out blankets, unfold chairs, or hang hammocks to enjoy the sunsets over the river. On any given day, you might spot people tossing frisbees, firing up impromptu barbecues, or hosting classic Louisiana crawfish boils. Relaxing here offers a peaceful escape from the bustle of city life.
Picnic Paradise
While you won't find official picnic tables dotting the landscape, the expansive open areas make The Fly fantastic for spreading out your feast. Bring your own blanket, cooler, and maybe even a portable grill for those seafood boils that New Orleanians love so much. Fair warning: on sunny weekends, this place draws crowds - families, friend groups, and students from nearby Tulane and Loyola universities all flock here. But don't worry, there's typically enough room for everyone to find their own space.
Sports Central
The Fly isn't just for lounging - it's also a hub for active recreation with multiple athletic fields spread throughout. If you're into soccer, rugby, lacrosse, or flag football, there's a patch of grass with your name on it. Baseball enthusiasts will appreciate the five baseball diamonds, including the thoughtfully designed Whitney Bank Miracle League Field. This special field features a rubberized surface specifically created so children with special needs can enjoy America's favorite pastime.
What You Need to Know
You'll find clean, well-maintained restrooms near the main areas and baseball fields - a definite plus if you're planning to spend the day. Dog owners, rejoice! The Fly is dog-friendly, though your furry friends need to stay leashed while they explore the grounds with you.
Heading over with a large group? If you're bringing more than 25 people or planning to set up any structures (chairs, tables, tents, or those bouncy inflatables the kids love), you'll need to secure a park permit first.
Many visitors make a day of it by combining their riverside relaxation with a stroll down nearby Magazine Street, where local shops and restaurants offer plenty to explore after you've had your fill of river views. It's an ideal way to experience a more laid-back side of the Big Easy that many tourists miss.
