About the Location
A Hidden Natural Retreat
Located in southeast Shreveport, C. Bickham Dickson Park spreads across 585 acres along Old River Lake. As the largest park managed by SPAR in the area, it offers a mix of developed spaces and untouched nature, giving you plenty of room to explore.
The park's landscape consists of bottomland hardwood forests and shrub-scrub woodlands, making it good for birdwatching. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot several species, including what locals have lovingly nicknamed "dipper doo ducks." There's something special about spotting wildlife in their natural habitat here.
Get Out and Play
If you're into horseback riding, the park offers equestrian trails. Anglers will appreciate the fishing dock, however, be prepared for crowds during prime fishing times. The 200-acre lake welcomes small boats, but there's a no-gas-motors rule to maintain the peaceful atmosphere. This helps maintain a quieter atmosphere on the water.
The lake has limited bank access - about 30 yards total - if you prefer shoreline fishing. There's also a handy boat ramp for launching your canoe, kayak, or other non-motorized watercraft.
Take a Hike
The hiking trails here offer a gentle way to immerse yourself in nature. The main trail is an out-and-back path stretching roughly 2.75 miles - easy enough for families with kids. Just a heads-up: trail conditions can be unpredictable. After rain or flooding, expect some muddy or swampy sections.
The initial loop tends to be more accessible, but maintenance isn't always consistent. Some portions toward the end might require a bit more navigation skills. It's all part of the adventure, right?
Wildlife Encounters
Beyond the birds, the park hosts various wildlife, including deer that might make an appearance if you're patient and observant. The diverse ecosystem creates wonderful opportunities for wildlife viewing and nature photography. Don't forget your camera!
Science in Action
The park is home to the Red River Education and Research Park (RRERP), a joint project with Louisiana State University Shreveport. This facility focuses on studying and managing natural resources throughout the Red River Basin.
Researchers here continually monitor and study the local flora, fauna, and water quality - turning this peaceful retreat into a living laboratory.
Nature's Challenges
Being close to the Red River has its drawbacks - flooding has repeatedly challenged the park, sometimes damaging roads and fishing piers and occasionally limiting access altogether. It's the price of being situated in such a rich riparian environment.
Currently, the park operates as part of the Red River Wildlife Refuge and functions primarily as a nature preserve. You won't find typical city park amenities like playgrounds, grills, or picnic tables here - the focus is on preserving the natural environment rather than recreation infrastructure.
Before You Go
Dog lovers can bring their four-legged friends, but remember to keep them leashed at all times. If you're planning to fish, you'll need to fill out a self-permit available at the park.
Despite its management challenges, C. Bickham Dickson Park remains one of Shreveport's natural treasures - a place where you can disconnect from city life and reconnect with nature's rhythms.
