About the Location
A Highland Haven
Located in Shreveport's historic Highland neighborhood, Columbia Park is a compact 2-acre escape that offers a peaceful retreat from city life. With its rolling hills and canopy of mature trees creating abundant shade, this little park has a certain charm that makes it meant for an afternoon picnic or simply unwinding with a good book.
The park's green spaces have a serene quality that's instantly calming. One of the lovely touches is a small stream that meanders past the trees, adding a gentle soundtrack to your visit and enhancing the natural feel of the space.
What You'll Find
Kids can burn off energy at the playground, which features two separate play areas with various climbing structures. While the equipment might not be the newest in town, it still provides plenty of fun for younger visitors.
The park's gazebo and pavilion are natural gathering spots and offer a bit of shelter when you need it. These covered areas are well-suited for small get-togethers or just sitting quietly while taking in the surroundings.
If you're looking to get some steps in, the jogging and walking trail forms a 0.410-mile loop through the park. It's mostly shaded, making it comfortable even on warmer days. Thoughtfully placed benches along the way invite you to pause and enjoy the scenery or catch your breath.
Community Spirit
Columbia Park really comes alive during community events. The highlight of the year is the Highland Jazz and Blues Festival, which takes over the park on the third Saturday of September. This free event showcases both local talent and visiting musicians, drawing crowds who come to enjoy good music in a laid-back outdoor setting.
Beyond this signature event, the park hosts various city-organized gatherings year-round that bring neighbors together and make good use of this green space.
Good to Know
Dog lovers will appreciate that the park is pet-friendly, with many locals regularly walking their four-legged friends (on leash) around the path. Just be aware that parking can be somewhat limited, so you might want to plan accordingly.
Note that the park's restrooms have been permanently closed and sealed by the city. During special events, you'll discover temporary portable toilets, but for everyday visits, it's best to plan ahead.
With its blend of simple amenities and natural beauty, Columbia Park might not be the largest green space in Shreveport, but it's a well-loved neighborhood spot.
