About the Location
Historic Significance
SWEPCO Park, situated in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a historic 5.3-acre recreational area located in the Allendale neighborhood. Donated to the City of Shreveport by the Southwestern Electric Power Company, the park has a rich history that dates back to the Civil War era.
The bluff on which the park sits played a role in Civil War defenses and later became a community resource in the 20th century. Community investments have included the installation of playground equipment and a basketball court.
Unique Topography
The park is perched atop a naturally formed bluff with an elevation of 222 feet at the southern edge, descending steeply to 172 feet at its northern boundary. This dramatic 50-foot grade change over 340 feet is notable for northwestern Louisiana's typically flat topography.
Sweeping views from the park include a glimpse of Twelve Mile Bayou's riparian landscape, creating a tranquil setting that shields visitors from the nearby industrial areas.
Natural Environment
The park is framed by tall native hardwood trees, providing a serene canopy and cool shade, ideal for outdoor activities even during Louisiana's hot summers. Its aesthetics include a pastoral character and scenic views, making it perfect for relaxation and recreation.
Community Value
SWEPCO Park has been embraced as a community gathering space for family outings, relaxation, and recreational activities. However, challenges such as neglect and overgrowth in recent years have sparked calls from local residents to restore the park to its former glory.
The ongoing community efforts emphasize the park's cultural and historical importance to the Shreveport area.
