Wyman Park
About Wyman Park
A Natural Escape in the City
Situated in Baltimore lies Wyman Park, an 88-acre haven where the Stony Run stream meanders through a valley filled with towering beech, poplar, and oak trees. The park's irregular shape follows the natural contours of the land, creating little pockets of tranquility that feel removed from city life, even though you're right in the heart of Baltimore.
Within this larger green space sits the Wyman Park Dell, a 16-acre retreat thoughtfully designed by the Olmsted Brothers in the early 1900s. The same designers responsible for Central Park in NYC.
What You'll Find Here
The Dell itself resembles a natural amphitheater - a sunken lawn surrounded by steep, wooded slopes that create a peaceful retreat from the urban environment. The park beautifully connects neighborhoods like Charles Village and Remington, forming part of Baltimore's green network.
Tracing the path of an old Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad line, the trails here wind through woodlands and offer a fantastic escape for a morning jog or afternoon stroll. The Stony Run Walking Path provides some particularly nice views over the stream - good for nature photography without leaving the city.
Need to burn some energy? The recreational fields are great for impromptu games, while open grassy areas make ideal picnic spots. Kids have playgrounds on both sides of the park to explore, making this a family-friendly destination any day of the week.
A Bit of History
The land was once part of the Homewood Estate before the Wyman family donated it to Johns Hopkins University in 1902, with the thoughtful condition that part of it become a public park. The Olmsted Brothers applied their landscape architecture expertise, resulting in the pleasant space we see today.
Over the years, the park has evolved with community-driven improvements like the development of the Stony Run Walking Path and additions of playgrounds and picnic areas - all while maintaining its natural character.
Community Landmarks
History buffs will appreciate landmarks like the Union Soldiers and Sailors Monument and Harriet Tubman Grove, which honors the legendary abolitionist's enduring legacy.
The park is a place where neighbors gather for community events or quiet afternoon reading sessions. Dog owners particularly appreciate the Charles Street side of the Dell, which has become an unofficial dog park where four-legged friends can socialize while their humans chat.
Natural Beauty
The small creek flowing through the park adds a soothing soundtrack to your visit and doubles as a natural playground for adventurous kids and water-loving dogs. Massive trees create cool, shaded areas throughout - a blessing during Baltimore's warmer months.
The peaceful atmosphere makes this spot suitable for reading, taking calls, or simply sitting and watching the world go by. Regardless of whether you're looking for a quiet moment with nature or space for a bike ride, Wyman Park offers a versatile retreat from city life without the need for a long drive.
