About Boston Common

A Walk Through History

Established in 1634, Boston Common holds the title of America's oldest public park. Stretching across 50 acres in a pentagon shape, it's nestled between Tremont, Park, Beacon, Charles, and Boylston Streets. This park is a living history book that's been part of American stories for nearly four centuries.

The Common started its life as a simple cow pasture where locals could graze their livestock. Over time, it evolved into something much more significant - a place for colonial militia to practice drills, a site for (rather grim) public executions, and a gathering spot during the American Revolution. These days, you'll discover it transformed into a beautifully landscaped park where people come to relax, socialize, and participate in community events.

Who Keeps It Beautiful

The Boston Parks Department handles the day-to-day management of the Common, with significant support from the Friends of the Public Garden, a passionate non-profit group dedicated to preserving this historic space.

What You'll Find There

One of the park's most cherished features is the Frog Pond, which transforms with the seasons - in winter, it becomes a charming ice skating rink, while summer sees it converted into a splash pool where kids can cool off. History buffs might appreciate a quiet stroll through the Central Burying Ground along Boylston Street, where notable figures like Gilbert Stuart and Samuel Sprague were laid to rest.

Near Park Street Station, Brewer Fountain Plaza offers a more contemporary vibe with food trucks and various seasonal programs. A meaningful recent addition to the Common is "The Embrace," a striking bronze sculpture honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King's legacy.

Things to Do

The Common's sprawling grassy areas are excellent for spreading out a blanket for a picnic, diving into a good book, or simply soaking up some sunshine. If you're looking to stay active, the well-maintained pathways offer ideal routes for walking, jogging, or running, regardless of the season.

If you're visiting with little ones, head to the large playground with its modern equipment. During summer months, the splash pad at Frog Pond is a hit with kids looking to beat the heat. There's also a sweet carousel that's usually a hit with children (rides typically cost about $4).

You won't go hungry here either - food vendors are scattered throughout, selling everything from ice cream and snacks to sausages and drinks, making it easy to spend a full day exploring without having to leave for meals.

A Touch of Nature

Despite being surrounded by urban Boston, the Common is surprisingly rich with wildlife. Keep an eye out for the rather bold squirrels that dart between trees and sometimes approach visitors hoping for a snack. Tree enthusiasts will appreciate the variety of mature specimens around the park, many helpfully labeled for those curious about what they're seeing.

For the Dog Lovers

If you have a four-legged friend, you'll be pleased to know the Common is extremely dog-friendly. There's a designated off-leash area where dogs can run freely, and you'll frequently see people walking their pets, playing fetch, or chatting with fellow dog owners.

Part of Something Bigger

Boston Common isn't just a standalone park - it's a key piece of Boston's "Emerald Necklace," a connected system of parks and parkways that winds through the city. It also marks the southern end of the Freedom Trail, making it a convenient starting point if you're planning to explore Boston's historic sites.

During the year, the Common hosts everything from concerts and festivals to political rallies, welcoming approximately seven million visitors annually. Getting there is a breeze thanks to its central location and proximity to several subway stations.
