Franklin Square
About Franklin Square
Historic Origins
Located in Boston's South End neighborhood, Franklin Square is a charming historic park with roots stretching back to the mid-19th century. Masterminded by architect Charles Bulfinch, it was originally envisioned as one half of a larger green space called Columbia Square, with its twin, Blackstone Square, just across Washington Street. Together, they're often referred to as the Blackstone Franklin Square complex - a bit of a mouthful, but hey, that's Boston for you!
Spanning a cozy 2.48 acres (1.00 hectare), the square is neatly bordered by Washington Street, East Newton Street, James Street, and East Brookline Street. If you're trying to find it, it's just a block from the tempting aromas of Flour Bakery on Washington Street and a short two-block stroll from Boston University Medical Campus.
Design and Features
The square has a symmetrical layout with walkways that meet at the center, where a fountain sits - nice for photos or just quiet contemplation.
Tree lovers will appreciate Franklin Square's diverse greenery, with stately Sugar Maples standing guard around the perimeter and elegant Silver Lindens lining the interior paths. There's also a magnificent White Oak that adds character to this urban oasis. The park offers a peaceful setting for walking your four-legged friend or simply unwinding with a book, however we do wish there were a few more benches scattered throughout.
Architecture and Layout
An iron fence encircles the park, with welcoming entrances at each corner and an extra access point along Newton Street. This design, along with the park's overall layout, reflects the urban planning ideals of the 19th century, when the South End was Boston's up-and-coming neighborhood for the fashionable set.
Revitalization
Franklin Square hasn't always been in tip-top shape. Back in 1979, concerned locals rolled up their sleeves for a serious cleanup campaign, which eventually caught the city's attention and led to improvements including new fences, benches, and trees.
Over the last ten years or so, the park has seen a remarkable transformation in terms of cleanliness and safety. What was once a bit rough around the edges now feels much more welcoming. Today, Franklin Square continues its long tradition as a green refuge for the community - a peaceful little pocket of nature amid the hustle and bustle of Boston's vibrant South End.
