Harambee Park
About Harambee Park
A Park With History & Heart
Tucked between Dorchester and Mattapan, Harambee Park stretches across 45 acres of Boston greenspace with a story that goes back to 1892. Originally called Franklin Field, this park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted - the same landscape architect who created Central Park. While nearby Franklin Park was created for leisurely strolls and picnics, Harambee was always meant to be where Bostonians could get active and play sports.
One of the first things you'll notice are the gorgeous mature trees dotting the landscape, offering welcome shade on those hot summer days when you're looking to escape the concrete jungle.
Fresh Faces for an Old Friend
Starting in 2015, Harambee Park began getting some serious TLC through a multi-phase makeover that's still ongoing. By 2018, the west side along Blue Hill Avenue welcomed a modern playground complete with accessible play structures, slides built right into the hillside, climbing nets, and water features that kids absolutely love.
They also added basketball courts with energy-efficient LED lighting (perfect for those evening pickup games) and improved the pathways within the park. If you're into fitness, you'll appreciate the workout stations strategically placed along the walking routes - no gym membership required!
Sports Central
The renovations continued rolling in with multi-purpose soccer and lacrosse fields completed in 2021, giving local athletes proper spaces to practice and compete. In 2022, football enthusiasts got their turn with a new football field and practice area.
As of 2024, cricket is getting its moment in the spotlight with cricket competition and practice fields currently under construction - a testament to the neighborhood's diverse community.
Tennis enthusiasts can rally on the park's tennis courts, while baseball and softball players make good use of the baseball fields for both organized leagues and casual weekend games. When summer temperatures climb, the splash pad offers a place to cool off - families often gather here during the warmer months.
Where Community Happens
The name "Harambee" means "pull together" in Swahili, and that's exactly what happens here. Beyond its fields and courts, the park is a place where neighbors connect through sports, events, and shared activities.
On any given week, you might find community outreach programs, fundraisers, or sports tournaments bringing people together. During special events, local food vendors sometimes set up shop, offering delicious tastes of the neighborhood's diverse culinary traditions.
What to Expect When You Visit
Harambee Park has activities for many different interests. The layout creates separate spaces for different age groups and activities. Families with young kids naturally gravitate toward the playground areas, while the athletic fields fill with teenagers and adults engaged in everything from casual games to competitive league play.
Weekends and sunny days bring the park to life with multiple activities happening across its expansive grounds. This activity contributes to Harambee's community atmosphere. If you prefer a quieter experience to enjoy the greenspace, try visiting on a weekday morning when the park tends to be more peaceful.
