Charles River Reservation
About Charles River Reservation
A Riverside Haven in the City
Stretching for 20 miles along the Charles River from Boston to Watertown, Massachusetts, the Charles River Reservation is both a park and a ribbon of nature woven through the urban fabric. Covering 863 acres of both land and water, this linear park system offers a wonderful escape from city life without actually leaving the city.

Lower Basin vs. Upper Basin: Two Distinct Experiences
The reservation naturally divides into two different worlds. The Lower Basin includes the popular Charles River Esplanade and runs from the Charles River Dam up to the Watertown Dam. Here, you can find more manicured landscapes and city amenities - not surprising given its prime location between Boston and Cambridge.
Head to the Upper Basin starting at Watertown Square, and you'll discover a more untamed side of the river, with wooded areas and gentle curves that make you forget you're still in the metro area.

A Park with Purpose
Back in the early 1900s, urban planners had a vision: give city dwellers access to nature without a lengthy commute. When they dammed the Charles in 1910, they transformed what used to be a tidal estuary into a freshwater basin, setting the stage for the gorgeous park system we enjoy today.

Getting Active Along the Water
One of the reservation's best features is its continuous pathway network, including the Dr. Paul Dudley White Bike Path that creates an 18-mile loop around the basin. If you're a serious cyclist, a casual walker, or a dedicated runner, there's plenty of room to move.
The river itself beckons water enthusiasts too - kayakers, canoeists, and sailors are a common sight when the weather cooperates.

From Formal to Wild
The landscape shifts as you travel through the reservation. In some areas, you'll find meticulously maintained lawns and gardens, while in others, more natural settings provide crucial habitats for local wildlife. Don't miss landmarks like the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade (where concerts and events take place all year long) or the historic Watertown Dam.

Beyond Pretty Views
Beyond its recreational value, the Charles River Reservation has several important ecological functions. It provides green space in heavily developed urban areas, creates a pathway for wildlife to move through the city, helps control flooding, and contributes to improving the Charles River's water quality.
