About Timothy J. Toomey, Jr. Park
A Fresh Urban Retreat
Nestled at 71 Rogers Street in East Cambridge, Timothy J. Toomey, Jr. Park is a relatively new addition to the neighborhood, having opened its gates in September 2021. This two-acre green space emerged from the Eastern Cambridge/Kendall Open Space Study and the Connect Kendall Square Open Space Competition, both initiatives to increase outdoor spaces in the area.
Greenery That Matters
Walk through the park and you'll find yourself surrounded by over 150 young trees that not only provide much-needed shade but also transform this urban corner into something more natural. The center of the park features a versatile open lawn - flat enough for a casual game of frisbee or soccer, while a sloped section transforms into an impromptu sledding hill when winter blankets the area with snow.
What we love about the landscaping here is how it changes with the seasons. The designers clearly thought about year-round appeal, so there's always something visually interesting happening with the plants, whether it's spring blooms or autumn colors.
Something for Everyone
The pathways within the park welcome walkers, joggers, and wheelchairs alike, making this a truly inclusive space. Bring your four-legged friend along - they're welcome on the paths and have their own dedicated space to play.
If you have kids in tow, the playground is likely where you'll spend most of your time. With swings, slides, and climbing structures, it offers plenty to keep little ones entertained. The slides seem to be the star attraction for most children who visit. Parents can appreciate the open layout that makes it easy to keep an eye on exploring youngsters.
Thoughtful Touches
Dog owners will appreciate the fenced-in dog run where pups can socialize and burn off energy. When it's time to refuel, head to one of the shaded picnic areas equipped with tables - great for a casual lunch or small gathering.
The park's proximity to Kendall Square makes it an ideal escape from the bustle of Cambridge's tech and business hub. It's remarkable how this space manages to feel like a genuine retreat while being so centrally located. Whether you're looking for active recreation or just a quiet spot to read a book, Timothy J. Toomey, Jr. Park is a thoughtful green connector in Eastern Cambridge's network of open spaces.
